I have a 280ai with a 26" carbon benchmark tube 1:8 love the rifle shoots 143 HHs with H4831 .5-.75 at 3180 fps. and 168 LRABS with h1000 to .25" and 2850 but picked up a 6,5 saum so thinking of making the 280ai my dedicated elk rifle or bigger game. I am thinking about trying either the 155s but really hope to get the 172s to shoot. My question is with less pressure what powder should i be trying with 172s? I guess i have the same question as the original owner gave me some 123s for the 6.5 saum as well. I use h1000 in that. thnx

I have a 280 Remington and I have a 280AI.
24" barrel, CF Proof, 1:8.24T (not sure who come up with that twist rate)I shoot 168/175's. I use the following powders: 168-R22/23, H4831SC, IMR4955. 175-R26, IMR7977, H1000

I will be chambering up my 280AI this weekend. But I'm going to try the 154 AH deadblow. Will start with H100 and May try H4350. It's my first time trying the AH. I do have others to try but it has to warm up before I get into that. Have you seen the absolute load data in the reloading section on this forum? Not sure if any bullets that heavy have been loaded on there. I would call Steve At Hammer and ask him What powder to try.

This is what I did with the 155's

Yeah I was going to call Steve I just think h1000 may be too slow goben the pressure decrease but hoping 4831 but it may be a tad slow too. But if can get 172s shooting may be a deadly elk roind. 6.5 saum for everything else. I had hoped to get 156 EOLs to shoot in the 6.5 but may not be throated long enuff

Yes sorry. H100V. MagMan do you think H100V is to slow for the 155's. I have five lbs of it and was hoping it would work. With the 154 AH deadblow. I think others used R16 which is a bit faster.

Those will be to slow, RL17 will be in your ballpark If you can't get a decent case fill with that look at H414

Of course I have 10 lbs of h1000 and 4831sc. Dang it!! Do have some RL16. How temp sensitive is 17? I've always just used Hodgon powders

I'm shooting one ragged hole with a bartlein, I think the contour is 3B, 1:8.7 twist....load is 168 gr Berger VLD Hunters and 57gr of H4350. Had the rifle built and wanted to shoot 140s...not sure if the gun just didn't like em or the barrel was not broken in (although I have mixed feelings on the barrel break in topic). Either way I went up to the 168s and initially it was grouping a steady .4, then over the next 15-20 shots it tightened up consistently.
Anyway, the barrel has around 45 rounds through it and has stayed at a very steady 2950fps.
Ive never elk hunted but I lve always thought the 168 was at or close to lightest end of the spectrum for a bull elk.
I can say that I shot a fairly small whitetail Doe this yr with it and it was an ugly scene. Slightly quartering away at 295yds or so.....hit right in the center of shoulder crease and blew the entire off side shoulder off....well close to it. Literally a softball size exit.
Id love to hear everyone's opinions on that bullet on an Elk. It's a joy to shoot with little to no felt recoil.....my fav all around and all time caliber hands down.
