300 PRC 215 VS 230 BERGER'S

I've used a 300 Ultra from Antelope to Yukon moose and every North American animal in between. 200g ELDX on everything. 75 yards to furthest being a black bear at 783 yards. Only animal to take a step was the bear who ran 20 and rolled. Moose at 87 yards dumped same as all the thin skinned antelope that were under a 100 yards. I'll never believe in "too much gun" or overkill. Have it when you don't need it is much better than not having it when you do.

No but doesn't mean it can't be used. His range was out to 800 yards. No such thing as overkill
His reality range listed is 500 and under....hopeful is 800....but I've always said the same as you too....There is no such thing as overkill....dead is dead! But he will be happier as I am with DRT.....not dead Somewhere!

I have 47 years experience shooting Whitetail, Mulies....can Anyone tell me the thought process of using, or thinking one would need Rhino weight bullets for 500 yard...300 lb animals! Witnessing and from my own experience killing hundreds of deer (10 year guide and outfitter) heavies don't do it. They punch thru so fast the animals don't know they are dead for 80 yards! And 80 yards is 75 too far in brush or tall grass!.....just me....145-165 gr. Works dramatically better.....been there, done it, have the postcards!
How many of those were shot with the bullets OP is interested in?

For me I've seen more DRT dropped kills with the heavier bullets. I'm more for the ethical quick kill. NOT SAYING YOU CANNOT DO THE SAME WITH A LIGHT BULLET... just seems like I've seen more DRT with the Berger "heavies" in particular.

You have a valid point.

Ultimately its gonna depend on the acual mv you can push them at in YOUR rifle, because these two bullets are really that close.

The 230 is a lil longer 215.

If im looking at bullets that are this close in ballistics i typically use whichever one has the lower form factor. Unless i have a special need that warrants a higher SD, or more energy etc etc.

The 230's have a reputation of holding together a little longer and going a little deeper, but ive seen it go either way.
So maybe I should just do a ladder test with both first. I'll try to contact Berger for some load data for the IMR 7977 for both.

Far too many....which is why I commented....those and other 212s 208s 225s all in 300s from winchester, Weatherby, and new to me this year to witness the PRC...sweet round...just too much....my granddaughter with her 243 ( she's 13) was stopping Whitetails and Mulies up to 220 yards this year DRT...135 gr. Bullets....just me! CORRECTION TO POST 100 GR. NOSLERS

I use H1000 and 7977 in my 7mm LRM side-by-side all the time and the resulting loads tend to end up a few 10ths of a grain apart with H1000 usually a few 10ths less producing the same velocity. So, point being if you find a Min/Max H1000 load you can start with that min and work up to find your rifle's pressure point.

Any decent 6.5 or 7mm will kill effectively at 800 yards also. Especially deer size animals. I prefer those to big 30s or larger because of the pleasantness of shooting them. I'm not recoil shy but clearly the bigger bore bigger case cartridges are much more abusive. Even with brakes they are cannons. To each there own and the 300 Mags are certainly good LR deer medicine. 100-800 yards. Shoot'em if you gott'em.

That's good to know as well as I have seen a lot of data people have been using with H1000

I try to use the Enduron powders where possible because they shoot very clean and are very temp stable. I develop loads in the AZ summer and they stay stable into the winter. My 7 LRM barely builds up copper at all with 7977. I have 8133 but I have not used it in my LRM but it has shot very good in my 6.5 PRC.
