What is better than the Weatherby?

current 30 caliber factory magnums
I study them, shoot them and hunt with them, my goal is always performance

I have all but the 300 PRC & 30 Nosler, and of the two I prefer the 30 Nosler as I could make it work in my Tikka T3 300 WSM rifles (with lighter bullets) due to it's shorter length, but haven't had an opportunity to play with either, nor have I pursued it since my 300 Win Mags are close to and 300 WBY is equal to and I have a ton of brass collected and data worked up for both over the years, so really have zero need for them, 300 WBY wins that contest, for me......, then the 300 RUM blows them all apart, AND again I'm talking about ballistic performance and none of the hysterics (fluff... lol) some bring up, this doesn't include wildcats as I omitted them from the lineup pic but I have Tikka length wildcats based on my Razor case (500 Nitro Express) diameter that will make the Tikkas scream , my ideas are always based on maximizing the potential of a given action size, gets me into trouble with those who don't understand sheer maximum performance and will make do with the usual stuff and look down their noses on anything they don't understand and some just don't know what they are talking about to even make a judgement, life on the gun forums, lmao ....

I can be blunt at times (like a sledgehammer) and probably ding some feelers here n there but always present facts as I know them from experience, not assumptions or wild arse guesses, my apologies to everyone for not being a model citizen..... carry on
......

Better is a relative term. Better in what way ? It's also a personal decision based on a number of reasons. Price of brass a factor. Availability is another. Seems like today most shooters looking for a new cartridge are looking forward not backward. The newest 30's aren't the Weatherby's or Win mags. Nosler and PRC are the new kids on the block. The new big kid is the 300 NM and it's improved version is gaining popularity big time. Sherman's magnums are another and one I'll soon be building. If I had to pick one as the better of all, I couldn't. Being so close in performance that it's a matter of personal choice. All things being relatively equal, I chose the 30 Sherman magnum simply because it's not a common cartridge yet. Requires forming brass and specialty loading dies. That's what my reason for it was. I prefer non-common cartridges over standard(on the shelf) cartridges. Brass availability is important and several of the 30 cartridges have many options. Not sure about Weatherby but I'm assuming only Weatherby offers it. Hard to keep up.
I believe Norma makes all of the Weatherby ammo and brass.

Just curious, why did you choose the .338 Edge insead of the .338 RUM?
A few reasons; two friends were shooting extremely accurate Edge's, so I had them as resources regarding the build, reloading, and shooting. The Edge is also slightly faster than the RUM given the difference in case capacity. When I built the rifle, I had a pile of 300 RUM brass and felt it would be easier to size for the Edge. In the end, a personal choice.

I go through Kemmerer every year on my way to my deer hunt in G. Not too much to get excited about...

A sense of humor is a must if you hang with me & my crowd, far too many young bois & old farts out there getting offended over everything
everybody has an opinion and none of us will agree to every bit of someone elses fluff

I like and have plenty of older chamberings and new ones too but I also know their place when it comes to "Long Range Hunting"

30 cal will always kill better than 7mm, it's an indisputable fact and you can't drown facts with fluff
I think if the 30 cal WBY's, or any of the Wby's for that matter were as good or "heads above" the rest for " Long Range Hunting" then the armed forces would have considered them for sniper rifles, after all "Long Range Hunting" doesnt get any more serious than when peoples lives depend on it. There are variations of the 300 PRC being developed right now as well as others for sniper rifles. The 300 WBY was never in the running. Just as it has never been in the running in the past. I am not a WBY hater - I own one in a 240 - but that will be the only one. I have been reloading for 40 + yrs, but hey, to each his own.

My love of the Weatherby cartridges is based on hunting big game as I have witnessed & nothing else... The Military has an entirely different agenda ...... granted that accuracy is supreme, but politics play a massive role in the selection of one cartridge over another...

the 300 PRC IS NOT more accurate NOR better that any other existing 30 cal magnum cartridge, Hornady is capable of mass production of ammunition for the military at a discounted price... the cartridge simply meets the requirements, think about that for a minute......

The 7.82 Warbird is one of the best designed 30 cal cartridges to ever exist, The fastest 30 cal factory cartridge on the planet & extremely accurate to boot, case capacity is optimum for the .308 caliber .....unfortunately it was released to the public ahead of it's time, most were awestruck by it's performance and at the same time offended that it smashed their lil fave 300 Mags etc... so the hate ensued for 20 years, now we are at the crossroads where every mothers son is attempting to recreate the warbird velocity ... and call it a good thing

The .300 Weatherby is a tried and true long range round, fantastic for elk. Deadly for sure out to 600 yards. Superb with the Nosler 210 grain Accubond. What, if anything, is better? Gentlemen, state and explain your opinions, please.
You started a discussion that could go on for a long time laugh out loud I shoot the 7mm family lineup because my brother says 30 cal was best and I wanted to be different shame on me but after 35 years of shooting both they all get it done very well and from what I see it's most important to be familiar with the gun you are gonna hunt with....peace

A throwback to 1986, Layne Simpson and Shooting Times Magazine. 7mm Magnum STW (Shooting Times Westerner. Based on the 8mm Remington cartridge. Very flat shooting and lots of energy. You already have so many great cartridges mentioned, as well as the 300 Weatherby. Just thought I'd throw another great one your way.

I've just started hunting with a 7mm Rem Mag. from the reading I've done the 7RM is a little flatter shooting than most .30 cal rifles, but it sacrifices bullet weight (ft/lb force) which can be remedied by more practice and a better placed shot. I started hunting with a Savage model 110 in .270 win. and have no complaints. Got a good deal on the 7RM. Reloading Has taught me that I'll never have another belted magnum after this one. My friends with .300 magnum's, don't enjoy target shooting as much as i do, after 10 or so shots they are tired of shooting.

I looked up Kemmerer on the Internet and it looks like it could be a nice place to live.

I shot the STW back in the eighties and hand loaded for it. Had a 28 inch barrel. I used the WWC 860 machinegun powder, 100 percent load density, and the 175 grain remington core lokt bullet. Also the Nosler partition, 175 grain. Velocity as I recall was something like 3400 fps. Lethal on deer!
