SHORT ACTIONS ARE STUPID!!

Exactly my point. There are way more folks out there that don't read this forum and are more than happy with a 150 grain Hot Core from a 308. For a huge percentage of the rifle buying public the standard short action version of "pick a cartridge" is capable beyond their ability. If they feel the 308 just can't haul the freight, they can roll with the 30-06. And so it goes with most of the gun buying public. We are a long range forum, but the folks on this site don't buy enough model 70s to keep USRAC in business, even with their perfect standard length action (case and point). That said my next 6.5 PRC will be on a long action.
I built a 6.5 prc on a win pre 64 7.5 twist Bartlein and a 6.5 prc on a Curtis Custom short action with a proof 8 twist I can seat out to the lands with both max oal 2.960 mag length curtis bottom max 2.975 they both work just fine for me

Witnessing this trend towards Short Actions when we already have a Standard Action makes absolutely no sense. Why would I deliberately limit the amount of powder room or bullet length in my Rifle. Instead I only care what the minimum case length that will reliably feed in my Standard Action. Recently I have decided to attempt a long Action WSM budget Rifle so that I can let the Bullet hang way out of the case. Short Actions just can't do that. Instead Manufacturers should alter dimensions of "Short Actions" to the length required for 6.5x55 or 7mm Mauser. We've also witnessed these intentional Castration in AR15 & AR10 Military Rifles where short OAL diminishes the capability of the Rifles. All this over a few ounces that can cost 500 Yards.
You mentioned "short" "standard" and "long" and "short is stupid" and "can cost 500 yards"....what are you talking about? The standard "short action" is the Remington 700 SA, custom manufactures have solved the problem you are alluding to ie defiance has a "short" "medium" (standard 700 SA) "XM" (little longer) "long" (your standard I think) and "lapua length" really **** big. Others offer "short" "medium" (defiance XM) and "long". Short actions are fantastic tools and can shoot heavy (.243 - .338) for caliber projectiles at optimal velocity to make stuff dead out to 1200 yards. We have worked with the 6 mm, 6.5 and 7 mm mostly the last few years. Even with a 20" barrel the 6.5 short mag can drive the 156 EOL 2850 FPS with a 2.9250 COAL. 24" barrel on 7 mm Sherman Short shoots 175-195 grain bullets less than 2.970 COAL 2900-2800 FPS, the 30" barrel we have over 3000. Short, fast, deadly and efficient. Nothing stupid about this for us.

Things I used to hate that I really like now:
Savage rifles
Chocolate Ice cream
A blue vehicle
Turnip greens
Butter beans
Certain people
The list goes on and on

The point of the post is that the less hate you have for anything in particular that you can think of, the more potential to have more peace & not to miss out on something that you could have really enjoyed. I learned the hard way many times.

That new 6mm arc is a sweet cartridge, so I'm glad the industry isn't taking your advice. Fits in a mini action. I'm putting together a 300wsm as we speak, and it will shoot 190gr copper solids that will do amazing things, and do them out of a 24" barrel. If you can get the same performance out of a rig that is almost 3" shorter overall, why wouldn't you?
What action are you using on your 300 wsm for the 190gr bullets

I have a CA Mesa and I don't have the mag length. It is fine with Accubonds, Partitions and 130VLDs, but I have to single load my 140 VLDs. I don't really need the powder space, just the mag length. I won't know if I think it's worth it if I don't try it.

O.M.G.!
Sooo much written both agreeing and disagreeing with the OP that just about whatever "I" add will be moot.
Do I agree with the OP?
Yes.
Do I DISagree with the OP?
YES!
But as others have opined, variety is the spice of life and being a "spicey" critter mahself, well, gimme VA-RI-IT-TEEE!
Now can I afford all that I'd LIKE or desire to own? Oh, HELL NO!
I'd have gone broke if I bought or had made every gun/caliber I coveted over my seven decades I've trampled this planet and there is only so much square footage in my modest home with which to fill with gun safes and still be able to have room for a couch, TV, dining table and bed and chest of drawers for, well, my drawers.
So we compromise. Or at least "I" do.
Besides just HOW many guns can you shoot at any given time anyway?
Now that's not to say that I don't (or didn't) take at LEAST two rifles to the field with me during hunting season. One as primary for the game at hand and one (or another) as backup in case i took a spill down a mountainside and the rifle also took a tumble.
Yeah, sure, I could try to see if the scope had been knocked about during its tumble but I absolutely ABHOR hearing people target shooting during hunting season in areas that are not ranges and cause the game to become spooked. What 'Tards they tend to be IMHO.
But I digress.
I really, REALLY want a 6.5 CM and something like the newish ARC and, well, a LOT of others as well but I have to be honest with myself in this late stage in life.
I have FAR FEWER sunrises ahead of me than I've enjoyed so far and I have no one to leave my collection to when they discovered I didn't wake up some day so WHY buy all that stuff anyway?
And when they open my shop and find all my reloading supplies, and a BUTT-LOAD of primers and powder, their jaws will drop and the suspension on their truck will suffer.
What I WISH I had was a lot of friends who DID own those guns who would let me go to the range with them on occasion to let me shoot their toys.
In exchange I'd let them shoot some of MY Big Bangers like my .50BMG. They just have to help me load it up 'cuz I just about can't do it by myself anymore. Sigh.
Who knows? Maybe they'll get lucky and I'll give 'em a gun.
Like I did a new friend who helped me out when I had septic tank troubles.
I paid for materials and time (by selling a gun and extras...my savings is gone...thank you Bernie Madoff. NOT!!) and he went out of his way to come over within a few days. I exchange I gave him an older Remington 700 in .308 that was a "one-holer" with 5 shots at 100 yards with my tuned load.
It would take him several months to save to have a rifle built that shoots so good. But he did me a good turn at a time I was in crisis (and being disabled and unable to do the work myself) I did HIM a good turn.
Again I digress.
So all y'all Young 'Uns build/buy WTH you want and can afford (DON'T **** off your Lady and bust the household budget. You'll end up on the couch for God knows HOW long! Ask me how "I" know) and have fun.
And don't let Fuddy Duds like the OP tell you otherwise.
And if you are in the neighborhood, drag an Old Fart out to the range if you can.
You might learn something or get to shoot something you otherwise may not have an opportunity to.
And who knows? One day you might end up with a case filled with a Boolit Launcher you like for free.
It's nice to be nice some times.
That's all for now so I'm...

My best friend is a die hard SA owner. Me, a long action 90% of the time. I predator hunt with my 22-250. We always talk about me being able to reduce my powder. We never suggest that for him and his rifles. Fewer options I guess. I will add. I have enjoyed reading these posts for years! Many times I've LMAO.

I tend to agree...;. short actions are the curse that came when military went for 7.62 x 51 NATO,
AKA .308 Winchester. I've served with grunts and, yes, there is some extra weight, but I am so
ancient as to have carried a basic load in '06 ammo. Very little weight savings (not
noticeable even for me and I am a little guy.)

There ARE good shorter cartridges...the .243 Winchester, .260 Remington, 7mm-08, and
carefully loaded, yes, the .308 Winchester and moribund .358 Winchester. I still prefer the
longer cases for reloading. My 6.5 x 55 SE is long action...
