Do all rifle???

Do all is a tough rifle. On the two extremes of the game spectrum you're either blowing stuff up or wounding animals / not finding them. That being said, a hot 6.5 or 7mm might be the ticket.

To me, for a one do all, I would take a 6.5 PRC in something carbon and below 7 pounds dry. But again, you're probably going to blow up prairie dogs and maybe not find brown bear (I know, an elephant has been killed with a .22).

That being said, I do two guns. 5.56 and 300 PRC.

ObiWan, just being the "devil's advocate"......to which cartridges suggested by some, are you referring when you say "blowing stuff up"? memtb

Say a 300 PRC on a prairie dog...not much prairie dog left! I have to believe a 6.5 PRC might make a mess too on prairie dog and other very small game, but I could be wrong of course.

OK 👍 I thought you where referring to big game! I guess I read something different into your post!

And......Welcome to the Forum! We don't always disagree on the forum....just, most of the time! 😉 memtb

Ahh haha nope, sorry for the confusion. What I was getting at was that when people choose a "do all" or "middle of the road" cartridge it tends to be a cartridge too large for very small game and too small for very large game. So, the one do all cartridge might do well on white tail, but blow up prairie dogs and cause you to not find a moose or brown bear.

Thank you, memtb! Long time reader, decided to start contributing. Hey, disagreement can be healthy; certainly tends to foster some "innovative" conversation. That's the whole internet though I guess, a big old place to argue.

We likely fall into the "too big cartridge camp", but our rifles see minimal prairie dog/varmint use....though it occasionally happens. Ours lean a bit more toward the moose/big bear camp....but seem to be quite effective on deer/antelope as well! 😉 memtb

Haha, sounds like you and I are in the same camp then! I've done porcupine with .325.... I really only shoot 30 and up. Been running 30-06 for a long while, and actually just got in my 300 PRC today. I am putting together a 5.56 for predators though!

ObiWanKannoli To ostracize ourselves even more....we really do follow the "one rifle/cartridge for all" fraternity! The wife runs a .338 WM, and I a .375 AI. A long story how we got here! 😁 memtb

Why not build a custom rifle on an Ultimatum Action? Swap barrel/bolt head (when needed) & you can swap calibres as required. I'm getting one built for a 300 PRC initially, but will eventually have Bolt head/barrels in .308, 6.5 PRC, 7mm-08 & .243. There is an initial issue with mag feeding across the extreme range of calibres, but nothing that can't be overcome. A good record of DOPE & you have a stock/optic combo you never change.

@memtb haha, love it! I think I will get there eventually... I am a big fan of 325 WSM and 338's. That is as big as I have fired in a rifle, though. Those are some heavy hitters, I would be happy to hear that story!

Nothing real exciting.... someday soon, I'll shoot you a pm and try to explain! memtb

If you had to choose one rifle to hunt everything from antelope to elk, what would it be? This rifle must use components that are readily available. It must also be a caliber that is inherently accurate. No need to waste 600 rounds of 1000 round barrel life doing load development. I want to build a rifle but can't decide what to build.
What cartridge takes 600 rounds to find a load? Sounds like you're a candidate for a 6.5 Creedmoor and factory ammo.
