I had about 400 22-250 loads given to me, 55 gr. Nosler ballistic tip boat tail bullets, 30.5 grains of some sort of extruded powder?
Trying to id the powder but cant come up with anything. Checked my books and dont see a load i thought would match it?

Any Help

Dont want to waste the bullets.

I'm curious what the velocity is too ...

Hodgdon shows 30.0 as the limit for H322 which is extruded ... I'd be expecting velocity between 3425 and 3525 depending on barrel length etc ...

I'll second JMW67. If 4064, those would be about 5 grains short of a pet load I once had w/ 55 gr. Sierra - this being max. or above in some manuals.
I haven't ran any of thru a crony yet, Ill try to in a couple of days. Just seems low on the starting grains for either of them. Well maybe its just me, I don't load anything that low ,lol.

Any other info? ... what is the headstamp on the brass? ... wondering if it might be a softer one ...

Also - wondering how you came by them as you mentioned they were given to you ... anyone you know? Is it possible they didn't use due to pressuring their rifle when they got into a hot day scenario in a p-dog town, etc ... ?

All the 22-250 shooters I know personally are usually on the high end of velocity/pressure - all this could potentially be consistent with the H322 ...

322 does not look anything like imr 4064 or 4895 do not use this to determine what it is but it might give you a better idea the 322 is a small extruded powder were as the other two are somewhat larger

spot on JMW - don't use sight alone to determine but it IS useful for comparison to rule out/rule in ...

Velocity will be very important in determining - if very low, it is possible you have H4895 reduced loads ... although I would find such a thing in a 22-250 to be nearly comical :) ... how do you get red mist with a reduced load? 🤣

You are shoting someone elses reloads ?
yes they were given to by a friend of mine who loads but got rid of his 22-2250, I shot a couple thru the crony but it was to cloudy and got a reading of 600fps lol but i can tell they are greatly reduced loads. I will try again and get an accurate reading.

The Red Mist Exactly, I live in Eastern oklahoma and have been trying to find a place in the western part of the state to shoot dogs without going thru a guide, if any fellow shooters have any info, lol Thanks

FYI my own hand loads run about 3400 fps

what we did was take a road trip to a rural area in new mexico hit the cafes early am and lunch and feed stores/ranch supply stores talked to some locals and developed an area about 100 sq miles were we shoot them one of the ranchers lets us stay in an old house on one of his pastures They do not like the dogs but dont want to poison so we were a very good answer to their problem once you get get in with one or two landowners the others will come this may cost you a few meals or beers they have never taken money and we offer everytime we go so they do get some nice xmas presents they have also invited us out to shoot antelope a few times and no I wont tell you what area this is sorry :)

Had a guy tell me to make a wasted trip just to go to those places and meet the farmers and tell them my intensions. after they find what your doing most will let you shoot as long as you know the difference between livestock and a dog. Would not expect you to tell me the area , no problem.
Trying to stay in Oklahoma if I can Keep it within a days drive.

Chrono them when you can - I am now leaning toward H4895 based on that ...

Prior owner doesn't remember? ...

BTW - the noslers are good ... your brass is likely good ... your primers likely good ... you could always pull the bullets, charge with a known powder - even develop a load of a known powder and just burn up the "unknown" powder to ensure safety, etc ...

30.5 gr x 400 @ 7000 gr/lb = approx 1.75 lb powder ... not insignificant but also not like discarding 2lbs of H1000 either :)
