25-06 still getting it done

about 15 years ago I was thinking of getting one, I shot a 30-06 for 30 years, in 30 years I only missed 1 time because of a miss range call. 250yrds turned out to be 430. and way Love my 30-06 its an elk killer out to 500 yards yards

what do you think the 25-06 nock down power is, at what distance do you think it maxes out?
(for example, I can keep a bullseye size group at 615 yards, but I know I cant take a elk out passed 500)

I've owned a few 25.06's, that shot and killed very efficiently, but recently acquired a 25.06 ai. Well, this little philly has turned my head around, and you'll never pry it out of my hands. It is as said, the Rodney Dangerfield, and dosent get it's due respect. And for no good reason. Its attributes include low recoil, easy to load for, accurate, and with the right bullet, you can hunt varmints in the spring and summer, and change to a more robust bullet for big game. It Definitely gets my nod! Thanks Bean!

Loaded with the right bullet the 2 Bit-06 is a 600 yard max Elk, Deer rifle if you do your part

any of you guys hunt Elk with 25-06?

I know it does well on deer and hogs but how does it do on bigger game?
I personally have taken a good size cow and a younger bull elk with the Remington Extended Range ammo. Believe it was a 122gr bullet. A kid I went to jr high and high school used one to kill Deer and Elk. His dad had an old 257Roberts to do the same.
this was growing up in UT

My .25's killed everything I shot at up to 400 yards.
I think that the biggest thing eith this and actually any caliber for that matter, is bullet selection, and obviously, placement. If you use a bullet intended for varmints, on big game, you are going to be less then satisfied. In the 25 caliber, there are alot of varmint, and even heavy varmint bullets, that work, on they're intended target, but be off a little on a deer, or elk, your going home empty handed, or have an animal with an awful flesh wound, or poor penetration. Enter premium bullets, proper weight, and placement again, and you have a very capable upper big rifle. Iveshot monolithic bullets for years now, and recently, have gone to Hammer bullets, and I can tell you, nothing walks with those. Food for thought!🦌🦌🦌🦌

I will date myself a bit. The first gun I bought with my own money was a tang safety M77 V in 25-06 from B.B. Pawn in Abilene Texas. It was a shooter-Bailey (the owner)helped me out with a nice used Redfield accutrac scope and I shot about everything that moved South west of Abilene from about 1988-1997. Fed a steady diet of Speer 100 grain bullets I did not have many deer/hogs or coyotes walk away. I later switched to the 117 roundnose bullet as I found a hell of a deal on 5 boxes of them, and found they shot stellar in my gun--they worked too--. I like 25WSM fell under the allure of the 257 WBY in 1997 and bought a Weatherby accumark , but still have a ton of respect for the old 25-06.
Funny first gun I bought with my own money was a Winchester classic sporter 25-06 with a red field 3-9 scope. Used my extra student loan money to buy it back in about 93. Killed everything that I was available to hunt from Elk, deer, yotes Barbary sheep, bears, Oryx, ibex it was my only hunting rifle for about 10 yrs. It was my sons first elk rifle, he killed 3 cows with it all 1 shot. I will always have a 25-06 in my safe. I like the 115 BT or 110 AB's

The 115 BT or CT in a 25-06 is the deadliest combination I have ever seen to date

My 25's included a .257 AI, .25-06, & .25 Souper (AKA .25-.308). Not much difference in performance. Eventually, bullet choices got down to the 85 grain Nosler BT & 100 grain Barnes Triple Shock. Powder was H4350, RL19, H4831, RL22. I used the 100 grain Barnes bullet for deers and it could penetrate 3 feet or so into a deer ending with a perfect mushroom shape. I would use the plastic tip version now. The 85 Nosler got close to 3400 and nailed many rodents up to 400 & beyond. The Hammer bullets would be a prime consideration now. IMG_1350.JPG

The bigger bullet is a .50 BMG, I don't have any plans to get one.

I too am a Barnes fan. I was happily introduced to the Hammer bullets this past summer, let me tell ya, they are no joke. Love this thing man.

7stw and I are running the Hammers out of our 25-06AI's with phenomenal results
