When I think back on all this stuff it's like it happened to someone else. Some many crazy and weird things over all the years. Nothing is ever the same, like it is with coyotes. Always some new twist or challenge it seems. I was on them again this past weekend and got one to howl but some others guys were hunting the same pack. I think they had us figured out. I was bummed because I hunted in the rain all day sunday it was miserable as hell.

I skin them. I was 4 miles from the 4 wheeler. I've actually only killed one near the trail. I was stupid and carried one off the mountain on my shoulders once. He was 120 lbs and it was 1.5 miles. I will never do that again. They stink, it was gross, he was heavy, it was just stupid.

6.5-284 running 147 ELD's. I use a 6.5 PRC now. Basically the same. PRC works better in a shorter barrel which is the direction I've gone since running a suppressor.

Brent... have you found it to be a common trend that after one is shot, that the others will come back to look for their missing member?

Generally yes. Not always tho. I've seen packs leave the area and not look back. They may have come back in the dark but I wasn't there to check. Next day I've come back and they are gone. It seems the smaller the pack the better the chance. Pairs are usually a higher percentage of return. FB just had memory pop up on the male and female pair I killed 4 years ago. Shot him a 980 and her at 606. As soon as I shot the male the female took off and I howled a few minutes later. She responded and I was able to get her to come back.

Hmmmm... I just shake my head...WOW....LOL.
That makes sense on the pair, and small packs, might be the same thing as shooting the Alpha Male? Do they come back quicker if one is wounded?

Since that time I learned that canine distress call works very very well for getting their attention and coming back. If I shot one today and the pack took off, I'd hit the distress asap and start working the pack. This spring I used a distress on a screwed up set and pulled a wolf right into my lap at 38 yards. It was a semi desperate attempt to recover from an error and worked out. I don't have a conclusive thought on this but it has worked often enough to make me think it is a valuable tool. I've also had packs not respond to anything until I distress called. Then all hell broke loose. We'll see. I'm still learning and attempting to get better at this gig. I still shake my head and wonder what I should or should not do.

Do you think that there is any kind of scent/smell that would over power the human scent strong enough that they would jump into your lap for shotgun kills?
I guess if there was such a powerful scent, then all the trappers would be using it.

I know that pup in distress is always my go to call when calling coyotes, and from everything that I've read or watched about calling in wolves... pup in distress is always the Ace up the Sleeve.
