Hello all,
I have a Tikka T3 chambered in 270 Win that I want to rebarrel and build a rifle suitable for sheep hunting. The caliber has to be something wildly available (no wildcats), I fancy 280AI and 6.5mm-284 but I do prefer 280AI because I can easily shoot the 155gr Hammer. I want a 22in carbon barrel with a muzzle brake. I don't chase velocity but I do like to get around 3000 fps so I don't have to worry much about bullet drop. If you have a similar build please share details, also being a Tikka I worry about the short clip.
I need your thoughts and input please.

I don't think the slight increase in performance would make me go from 270 to 280AI just for that. Now, if your 270 barrel is slow or inaccurate then by all means go for it. 280AI is an excellent round.

I'd trade the brake for an extra two inches of barrel, but that's me. Noslers load data has a few powders over 3,000 fps with 150's, but that is with a 26" test barrel. 3,000 with 155 monolithic might need more case capacity than the 280AI gives, but Ive never owned one.

If you're worried about length in your magazine the 7 SAUM has similar velocities with 150gr bullets and could be loaded long in your tikka. You would need to open up the bolt face or get a new bolt. I'd say the SAUM and 280AI are both relatively niche cartridges.

This is just me, and I know it wasn't an option you listed but...I'd just develope a load for your .270 and call it a day. The 140 Berger or the 145 Horn would be good starter places.

Another route if the Hammer was of interest is to give their 117 a go. The 117 is running just under 3300 in my 24" barreled .270 and shoots bug holes.

Side note the "Absolute" is of interest, but not until I see pressure tested data for it....

Same bolt head as your current set up, the magazine is long enough that you can sit pretty much anything where ever you want, similar case capacity to 270, excellent brass available in 3 or 4 of the best brass makers

can't go wrong either way but I would consider going with 24" barrel. I don't think you'll notice a difference in the field. I have a 22",24", and 26". I do not notice a difference between a 22 and 24. I do notice the 26. If your going to hand load and shoot besides hunt, adding 2" is worth consideration. Enjoy the process!
