Savage 110 300WM Bullet Choice?

Hello all,

I have a Savage 110 chambered in 300 WM that I want to load for. I use this rifle for bear, elk, and mule deer. I want a bullet suitable for hunting ranges out to 600 yards and some further target practice. The rifle is a 24" barrel (IIRC) and a 1'10" twist.

I don't currently have reloading equipment, but am planning to order loaded ammo from a reputable reloading compant.

I am going to order a box of 50 bullets, with 5 different bullet choices and 10 rounds per bullet.

I will list the following bullet choices available - which 5 would you recommend to order? "Best" bullet? "Worst" bullet?

Berger:
215g Berger Hybrid
210g Berger VLD
205g, 180g Berger Elite Hunter
190g Berger VLD Hunter
175g, 230g Berger OTM Tactical
245g Berger EOL Elite Hunter

Hornady:
212g, 200g, 178g, 220g Hornady ELD-X
208g, 178g Hornady ELD-M
230g Hornady A-Tip Match

Nosler:
190g, 210g Nosler Accubond LR
180g, 200g Nosler Accubond
180g, 200g Nosler Partition
210g Nosler RDF
180g Nosler E-Til

Barnes:
180g Barnes TTSX
190g, 200g Barnes LRX

I also have a choice of brass: Hornady, Norma, ADG (this may be less available) or Peterson.

Which brass would you reccomend?

I'm in a similar situation with a new Christensen MPR and am going to try to make a 215 hybrid work. That being said, it's all based off internet advice and I haven't put the bullet on meat yet.

I will say that I shot quite a few whitetail and BIG hogs with a 180 partition out of a .300 wsm in two separate rifles and have nothing bad to say about that bullet. Everything I shot died within 15 yards, which I'm my opinion is saying something when hogs are involved. Those things can defy the laws of physics in my experience.

I should be able to report back on the 215s performance on some hogs in the next week. Seems like that and the 212 eld-x are are the bullet of choice for a lot of folks with a 1-10 twist.

I'm going to be trying federal brass, because that's what I found.

180 GR TTSX. If I had to decide on a do it all bullet in a 300 WIN, that's it.

Would be interested to hear your reports on the Hybrid. Personally, I haven't felt comfortable trying that bullet yet for hunting purposes, although I do know many others do.

I'll get back to you. I'm skeptical as well. I shot quite a few whitetail with 175 SMKs in a .308 win. Some went fine, others had exits the size of my head. I never had one survive, but I sure lost a lot of meat that could have been saved had I shot a true hunting bullet. Meat is my priority so trying to avoid that.

In my opinion, it's hard to go wrong with heavy-for-caliber Berger bullets.......especially in the .300 Win Mag.

Haven't tried the 215 hybrid out of my 110 yet but have had excellent results with the 210 HVLD. Also a big fan of the accubond as an all purpose bullet. Very consistent performance and typically good accuracy.

You are overcomplicating it, load the 215 Berger (2nd choice is 205) and you are golden. If you have not seen it, do a search on BROZ's real-world success in harvesting elk with .300 WM, 215 Berger, and H1000.

For what it's worth. I'm a 6.5 shooter , but a hunting buddy uses a 308. He takes his elk every year with the Barnes 130gr. Has never failed him . One shot kill every time. Now you said 600yds, OK. Have you ever shot a 130 gr bBarnes at this ra

Yes, 205 over 210 or 190. Look at the dimensions/BC and you'll see why. My son and I have shot plenty of antelope and deer (WT and muley) under 150 yards without any expansion issues. I can't seem to find the picture but my son shot a muley buck bedded at 98 yards, didn't know what hit him. The 215 is propelling out .300 WSM at 2800 FPS.

Good to hear that bullet performance has been good! The only other issue I run into is the COAL with the magazine on the rifle - I'm limited to under 3.5", I believe, and the load is measured out to 3.6" unfortunately... the 205g Berger, however, is loaded to 3.4" so may be worth a shot to try?

That's one of the limitations you have to deal with. I have 3 .300 WMs and all of them have different COALs, my SAKO M995s is 3.66" and the other 2 are 3.53s one of which is a Savage 111F. You can still have a decent load with 3.5" COAL. Berger 1st ed reloading manual is loading them at 3.34" for the .300 WM.
