I want to get my daughter a rifle for Christmas. Pretty much set on a 6.5 creedmoor. I would like to do something custom or at least semi custom with her. She loves shooting and reloading, I thought she would enjoy this to. I looked at rebarelling a tikka. Now I'm considering going with a savage action, McGowan barrel, but what stock? I spent like 3 hours googling last night and really couldn't find anything I cared for. I'd like to keep it light, she's just a little 12 year old. I'm also really not sold on the big heavy wood stocks either. Just something simple like a black or gray background with some spiderweb or some type of design. Any ideas? Thanks

Bell and Carlson have a couple of models like that and have a full aluminum bedding block. I have the M-40 Weatherby style and like it a lot. Hogue also makes pillar bedded and full block models. I actually have a Hogue full bedding block SA in OD green I'd be willing to part with if interested

The mdt chassis are fairly light, and you can use an AR carbine tube and stock for huge adjustability

Hard to imagine you'll get anything "semi-custom" ready by X-mas, so have you considered just an off the shelf Savage? Hear me out...

I'd never again buy an OEM Savage to shoot, due to some pretty severe history, but I do love them as build platforms (just finished a 264WM). If you're planning for "semi-custom", dropping $500 on a complete rifle (used or good deal new) might solve the "Before X-mas" problem, and provide an opportunity for Dad-Daughter bonding going forward.

1) You can get something in hand to lay under the tree, so you get the cool points ASAP.

2) THEN, you thoroughly involve your daughter in the "build" over the next couple months.

As for stocks, the options are VERY slim compared to 700 pattern, but at least you're looking at short action, which is way better than long action. I'm personally a fan of the bog standard Savage Tupperware Accustock.

Summary? Perhaps buy an off the shelf Savage, then enjoy guiding your daughter through the process of deciding what SHE wants!

I recently put a Bell & Carlson stock (Varmint/Tactical) on a Savage 6.5 Creedmoor (Shilen pre-fit) and did the sponge paint-job myself. Very easy to do and would be something fun for you and your daughter to do TOGETHER. 😉

I'll put in a vote for the Accustock. They're ugly as sin but man do they shoot and the later Accufit models have the ability to change the cheek riser and LOP. From what I've heard from other shooters, the only thing you're adding with a B&C or similar aftermarket is cost and weight (I get that appearance, comfort, and other factors matter I'm merely talking about the function here, so please no-one with an aftermarket stock take that as any sort of slight at all).

Just remember the lighter you go the more felt recoil. Their is a balance of weight and recoil with younger shooters in my opinion. Most of the time these younger shooters will be shooting off a bipod, shooting rail, or out of blind with some sort of support so light weight is not really critical in my opinion. Last thing you want to do is make a new shooter, recoil shy. Just my two cents.

I agree with the ugly part. It just confuses me what savage does. They produce such wonderful functioning rifles with great options (such as accutrigger, accustock...etc) but dang...why do they not get some better designers as far as looks are concerned?!? Their new ultralight rifles are amazing bang for the buck and if the stock looked better it would have been an absolute Grand Slam home run but instead it is just a home run lol.

The problem with the MDT route is that it's obnoxiously expensive. Their cheapest chassis is $400, and that's before you add an AR 15 carbine stock and a handgrip and a magazine if you don't already have one. Don't get me wrong I love my LSS-XL with a magpul PRS but it's not at all a cheap setup and weighs around 6 tons. Their everything included Oryx brand looks intriguing for $400, but I can't offer any first hand reviews.

Look into Stockade. Kevin has some very nice stocks. I own a couple of them and they are well built and very user friendly. He offers stock fits for sporter thru HV barrel contours. The hunting sporter looks like a nice lightweight stock for a smaller or younger person. Not sure what your barrel contour is or will be but he can fit you into a stock for any barrel. Good luck. John
