I have an older from maybe late 70's Rem 700 ADL in 7 mm mag. I am not happy with the cycling to unload it and always had issues trying to get the bolt to pickup a round. been wanting to change to the BDL style. Now if I change out the stock and add a trigger and then not satisfied with overall shooting, I assume I am restricted to bbl replacement type since I bought a stock first ? I am not familiar with the diameter of the chamber end of the bbl. Can somebody educate me on bbl & stock purchasing. Thanks

You can almost always open up the barrel channel in the stock if you go bigger. The only real issue might be if you buy a stock that has an extremely thin forend. If the forend is too thin then you'll need to make sure the removal of material doesn't make it weak.
You can always buy a stock with a larger barrel channel and put a smaller barrel in it. You would just have a gap around it. Some people don't like the way that looks, but functionally it's perfectly fine

I had similar questions on a recent build. Stockys Stocks people were able to help me with the specs. If you are considering barrel replacement, I would suggest picking a brand, length, and profile of barrel so that will be compatible with the stock you purchase. It will save you a little in the future.

First things first.
Take your rifle intact to a good gunsmith who understands feeding from a magazine. Have him straighten out the feeding problem. But if you just want a project to play with and you're not concerned with solving the problem with your original set up, follow through.
How is it shooting now? Has it been bedded properly, stress-free?
Changing out the stock for a BDL inlet then buying BDL bottom metal can get to be a little expensive without fixing the original problem or knowing how it shoots.
As to the rest of your post, it's throwing good money after bad. Why go through all the processes you describe, spend the money required, all without answering the necessary questions.
Personally, I'd suggest having a gunsmith fix the feeding and pick up problems then sell this rifle in this upbeat market. Look around for a decent used or new BDL-style rifle in the cartridge you want to shoot. Much simpler and cheaper than playing 'what if'.
