Hello,

I have a Savage 110 in 300WM and I am getting the itch to start "building" it a bit.

This is a hunting rifle, so the least weight gain I can manage is highly welcomed!

Stock recommendations?
Should I stay with factory barrel till it is shot out before swapping barrels?
Factory ammo recommendations (hoping to get into reloading soon)?

Thank you all in advance, and any additional mods/upgrade ideas are highly welcomed!

Stockade makes good Savage stocks. I would shoot the Savage barrel (assuming it shoots well) until it is burnt out. You just have to try a few factory loads to see what it likes but I look for high BC bullets in a factory load.

Is it an accutrigger model? Or the old flatback?

There's so many chassis systems and stocks for savage now. I say shoot the barrel until you can't anymore, the 300 is a heck of a round. Then when you want to rebarrel, maybe step it up to a 338 rum because why not!

Good round. I burnt the barrel out on my Savage 112 BVSS last year and went with a 28" Pac Nor, 9t (pre-fire). The first thing I did was find a Ryan Mantha reamer and ran that through it. That opens up the "head room" a little in a otherwise SAAMI chamber. This allowed me to seat 215gn Bergers and Hornady 212ELD-x's out to 3.7xx" (same marketing ploy used by Hornady for the .300PRC).

I've been reloading for 35yrs and load for all my rifles and a few other guys. The RM reamer was a worthwhile endeavor for me, as it allows me to carefully customize my LR loads near the top end. I modified my chamber with the intentions to run Bergers but got a tremendous deal on Hornadys so I went that route. I'm running 212's, Norma brass, RL26 w/BR2's, zero excess pressure at 3070fps.

Whether to stay with the factory barrel is up to you/budget. You'll find mixed opinions on here. If it's a shooter, which you may not realize until you start reloading for it, I say keep it. When you re-barrel it, regardless of the cartridge or chambering you choose, the fun starts all over again.

I was just looking at MDT's website (MDTTAC.COM) and they have some interesting (to me) chassis systems. I went looking for one that can handle the diminutive 6mmBR. They make one that does (LSS Gen2) and uses external mags. Weight was about 1.4-1.6 lbs but is available for Savage LA/SA. I may go that route for my 6BR.

Good luck, happy shooting.

I built one with a McMillan Game hunter edge fill, loved the stock!) rifle basix sav 2 trigger is great, went with a bartlein pre fit barrel from southern precision that was super accurate and easy to load for(worth the money) , criterion prefits are another great choice. And 300 win mag is almost never a bad choice.

Though I prefer other actions, you can't go wrong with Savage.
Build whatever tickles your fancy. I have 2 Savage long actions
  • 6.5 x 55 Swede BJAI (Bob Jourdan Ackley Improved 40°), McRees chassis, Timney trigger. No brake needed.
  • 338 Edge, varmint barrel, MDT LSS-XL chassis (mistake for this barrel selection), Sharp Shooter Supply trigger. MB&M 5 port brake.
Both are great shooters.
Edit to add, if you have their fiberglass accustock with the aluminum V-block, those are pretty darned good.

I have had success the stock savages as is. I usually swap the SPRINGS out on the accutrigger (that's not for everyone). Once the trigger is light and I get a load I'm happy. Even the bad groups aren't half bad.

Stock recommendations?

I've put several Bell & Carlsons (and a McRee's G7 chassis) on my Savage builds and have been extremely pleased with them. I see that Boyd's stocks were mentioned and I want to throw in a word of caution here. I've only tried one recently (a couple weeks ago actually) and the wood 'Boss' at the rear action screw hole split at some point when torquing the action down and caused all kinds of issues from binding up the trigger to inconsistent target results. Of course, I didn't discover this until I was ready to wrap the rifle around a telephone pole for having "potato gun accuracy". I say this just as a cautionary measure and certainly NOT to bash Boyd's in any way, shape or form. I could've just received a 'lemon'.....it happens.

This one was an experiment and my first Savage. Picked up the action and a used X-caliber barrel on here a few months ago. After putting the barrel on in the garage and firing it for the first time, I was hooked (already have a pre-fit Remage on it's way for another rifle in 300 RUM). Sent it off to McMillan and had the Game Warden fitted. A little over three months later...

If you are looking for a good stock, I recommend this one. Fit and feel is a good tactical hunter, yet not super heavy.

I have hs precision on a couple. Stockade on a couple. Hs precision is better than b&c. Love the stockades but took a year to get them. Never owned a McMillan. My money is on HS precision. Especially if you can pick up a used one. My factory savage 300 win was the police model. Bedded the recoil lug. Put on savage factory target trigger. Shots 1/2 moa or less (depending on shooter and wind) out to a thousand. 208 amax and some H1000. A new stock and it should be a shooter.

As I've found out in building a .308 Norma Mag, there are fewer makers of composite stocks for Long Action Savages than there are for Short Action Savages. Manners, for example, told me in an email that they will not make anything for the LA. I really wanted a T4A for this build, but it is not to be. The closest that I've found is Stockade's Prairie Dog Special.
Short term I have it in a Boyd's stock. There is not a lot of material in the stock for adding pillars. I do not think that this is the fault of Boyd's. I think it is the fault of the action design. This likely explains why Manners won't make stocks for them.

Rifle Basix, Timney, and Jard make replacement triggers if you want to explore what is beyond a tuned up stock trigger.

I consider Northland Shooting Supply's precision barrel nut and ground recoil plate to be required parts on a Savage build, but if your rifle is shooting acceptably I don't think that I'd mess with those until the barrel is shot out. Pacific Tool & Gage also makes these parts as well, and they make various tools to tune-up these actions. In my experience their reputation is deserved and when I need something they make I try to buy it from a vendor who has physical inventory of whatever it is that I want. If it has to be ordered, I order it direct and hope that I'll get it within a year. Some folks won't buy from them at all, and I can understand that. At this point in time if you want to use an AICS mag on a LA Savage they're the only ones currently making the required bottom metal. There was another mfg, who was more highly rated by their users, but they appear to have gone under or something. I could not find any for sale.
