Read some posts that are a year old, anyone have updates? Are the Inreach devices the way to go? Do any of the devices help with BaseMap or OnX when no cell service? What's the best combo?

I've had the inreach for 3 years. Hurt my back this year in the backcountry and was able to to text the outfitter to come pack me out and update the wife along the way. The system worked great. The GPS is standalone and I don't really use it. I just save offline maps in OnX for my navigation. Garmin changed the way they bill where you can start and stop without penalty. i think I pay around $20/month with a bundle of included messages.

I've been super happy with my inreach up here in AK. As you can imagine there's not a whole lot of cell service lol. Haven't had to use it for emergencies, but have used it to call for help packing game out or for a boat to come pick us up due to gear failure.

I don't rember offhand what it costs monthly, but you can suspend the account at any time for any reason for any amount of time and start it up again the same without penalties and you don't pay for the months that it's suspended. I havent don't that in a while though as we use it on short notice throughout the year for various activities.

As far as onX goes, I just download the maps to my cellphone to use offline, put it into airplane mode and bring a small battery bank (or solar charger for the longer excursions) to charge it and the inreach from.

Whatnext and XSIVSPD thank you both for your information. This sounds like good insurance when in remote areas. So I gather that the GPS in our phones works in Airplane mode?

Happy Thanksgiving,David

On most phones it does stay on. Even if it doesn't, you can manually turn it back on.

It's under "location services" on Android phones, and named something similar on iPhones. Depending on your phone, it might be in the menu you pull down from the top bar or you might have to go into the settings to do it. Samsung phones have it in the drop down like my picture.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
