Long on purpose?

When hunting I always try to close in on the animal as possible for the shortest shot. I always reduce the range if I can. Do any of my fellow bloggers on this site keep the shot long on purpose? It is more of a challenge that way. With the modern equipment available nowadays perhaps closing in for the shortest shot has become a thing of the past. What do you think?

I don't take long shots if I can make them closer. But often times it's impossible to get closer without risking losing sight of them. For example shooting from one hilltop over another to a third hilltop. When you go down the valley and come up the second hill, the game could be gone and you'd have no idea where they went. If I feel I can get closer and be successful, that's what I do. If I'm trying to shoot as far as possible for the sake of it, I shoot steel. I shoot long because for me, it's often "if you can't make it from here, you're not getting them at all." Especially useful to shoot long range in the flatlands where the game is alert and won't let you get within a few hundred yards of them.

Closer when possible. Last weekend my wife and I spotted a nice coues buck feeding over 800 yds away, winds were 30 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, with those winds I had to get closer, unfortunatelly we lost him at 400 yds. If the winds would've been calmer then at 600 I would've comfortably taken the shot.

Closing the distance is not always the best shot, in fact many times it's not and forces you a much poor shot selection, being capable of more range in more conditions just means I can pick the best shot on the exact animal I want, I don't really care about the range it happens at just the quality of the shot available which I think should be the goal.
