Found a pet factory load my Tikka .270 likes...Federal Premium Sierra Gameking 150 grain. Reviews are mixed on expansion. Anyone got field experience with 150 grain .277 Sierra Gameking on medium game?

They are on the softer end of the spectrum. You'll have no problems with expansion but may find you don't get a pass through on larger bodied deer. Killed a 177# with a 150 SGK perfectly broadside impact velocity of 2864 FPS, no exit. Got quite a bit of meat loss around the entrance I'd say 5" around the entrance was blood shot badly.

Close range shot? This is opposite of typical reviews. Most reviews say bullet is kinda tough for thin skinned game. Thank you for feedback.

I would bet they work fantastically on deer large and small..
This is what Nathan Foster at ballistic research had to say about the federal premium Sierra game king.
The 150 grain Sierra GameKing advertised at 3000fps, gives around 2950fps in 24" barreled sporters and around 2880fps in 22" barrels. The 150 grain GameKing is an odd projectile; too stout for fast kills on light game with rear lung shots but too soft to be useful on larger medium game. This load is perhaps best suited to game weighing right around the 80kg (180lb) mark at extended ranges of 200 to 350 yards - a very narrow range of performance.

Just remember accuracy is only part of the equation. Bullet performance is very important. Its easy to get enamored with a load or ammo that shoots small groups. Why you think so many guys shoot Bergers lol. Seriously though my only experience with sierra hunting bullets was not with this particular bullet but it was not great. Nathan gives a good rundown on bullet performance based on real world results. I highly recommend his site.

Let's just put it this way. If the bullet was no good then Federal would not have been loading this bullet for all these years and Sierra would have stopped production of it. You would think by the way people talk these days that if it is not the latest greatest sexy highly promoted new bonded mono whatever bullet then it just will not kill game. I have been killing game with Sierra, Speer, Hornady, Nosler, Remington, Winchester among some other cup and core bullets for over 40 years with no problem. If you do your part then those Sierra will do their part no matter what some "expert" says.

I've been using Sierra game kings in .277 150 gr boat tails since I bought two boxes of Federal premiums back in 1979 . They made my rifle plain shoot and I started handloading 2 years later. I have found the SGK to be fantastic bullets for accuracy and they have performed outstandingly on deer and antelope from 50 to over 500 yards . No bullet that I know of can be perfect in every hunting situation and I have two shots on whitetails hit the rib cage and zip right through the other side because they hit cartilage leaving a quarter size exit hole ! Both deer ran 100 to 150 yards. I got end to end penetration on a Big Mule deer buck at over 400 yards . I feel that they perform closely to Nosler accubonds that my sons rifle likes. Federal premium ammo has been pretty good to me and most of the hunters I know . Use it with confidence .
Sierra bullets will kill any deer in the world as long as they are put where their vital organs are. Plain and simple . Never have I not been able to get them to shoot good . With very little tinkering . The 150 in a 270 should flat out hammer a deer . If anything the 150 may be a touch heavier than necessary from the 270 but I'll bet money you poke any whitetail or mule deer from the last rib forward towards the brisket and you better have a sharp knife handy. It's all in where you shoot them !
Cup and core bullets will work! I used a 180gr Speer hot cor with 2850fps muzzle velocity on a bull elk this year and he dropped in 50 or so yards. Very minimal meat loss. My uncle uses his .357 revolver on deer and that works great!
Most of the issues I've read about people having with a cup and core are at very very high muzzle velocities on tough game like elk or moose. I would hunt confidently with your rifle and bullet choice.

My dad and I used it for a few years, 52.0gr of IMR-4350 did the job
It's a great deer bullet, the farthest I shot a deer with it was just under 400 yds with it, shoulder shot and dropped on the spot. Bullet was recover on offside skin. It's a fast deer killer but I would not use it on elk.

150 SBT in the 270 win has put many an elk into my freezer for Winter meat, so it may be alright for deer also. You guys way over think stuff.

For whitetail, I spend a lot more worrying on shots less than 100yd shots than I do worrying about what happens when I need to shoot 800yds.
Because of that, when I hunt with my 270win, I use 150gr ammo almost exclusively and don't worry. I have no concerns whatsoever from 50-300yds.
When I hunt with my 270wby, I use only 130gr partitions or 140gr accubonds. They shoot really well and are tough enough to perform reasonably well from 50-500yds.
