Bought a .270 Today

I own an old .270 Husky. It belonged to my Grandfather. I had it reblued and the stock hand carved and redone . It's a beautiful well shooting rifle that I used for yrs.
my go to rifle these days is a Sako Finlite in 300 WM. With a Zeiss HD 5 on it .
I have been asked to sell the .270 but I will never part with it .
 
My first deer rifle was a post 64 in .270. That was in the early 80s. All the hunters I looked up to recommended it. 40 plus years later, with more hunting experience and funds for a multitude of guns, I find myself grabbing a custom M70 in .270 more than any other cartridge. Literally, everything I have ever pointed that rifle at has died. I have shot jack rabbits, coyotes, mule deer, antelope, elk, and even a Shiraz moose with it. Sure debating cartridges around a campfire is part of the fun and nowadays, I'm sure their are far better specialized cartrdiges, but I have a sentimental feeling towards the .270 and it has proven itself to me over the decades. I have had two separate Wyoming guides ask me point blank, what I was hunting with. When I replied, " Model 70 in .270", both pretty much said the same thing. "Can't argue with that combo."

That is what I hunt with. I have 2, Browning A bolt and Sauer 101. Love them both and both are <1/2 MOA. Easily shoot 600 yds. I have a 300 WM that I love but still hunt with 270. My 6.5 CM is for target/tactical/steel. Love it too but too heavy to hunt with. It won't do anything better than 270. Will never sell any but 270 is my go to hunting gun.
 
Growing up my father had a custom .270 Win made by Hansen Custom Rifles. Just after WW II my grandfather had a match set of rifles made, one a .300 H&H and the other the .270. When he stopped hunting in the mid-50s, he gave the .300 to my uncle and the .270 to my dad as an upgrade to the sporterized star-barrel Springfield .30-06 that my dad had as a deer rifle. Dad passed the .30-06 to me and I killed several deer with it, too. Sadly, my home was broken into not long after I was married and the .30-06 was stolen, never to be recovered. To replace it, I bought a Colt-Sauer .270 Win and topped it with a Leupold VX-II 3x9-40. Smooth as silk action and the first three shots out of it were all touching at 100 yards. Still shoots the same 40 years later and it has accounted for everything from squirrels at 200 yards with Sierra 90 gr. hollow points to 300# mule deer in Wyoming with hand-rolled 130 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips (which I will never shoot again, but that's a whole other story).

Huge fan. My Montana Rifles Company X3 Extreme in 270 WIN performs extremely well when paired with 140-gr Barnes TSX ammo from Superior Ammo. Lonnie Crib developed a sample pack and helped me select this combination. I can't remember for sure, I think it was running around 2950 fps or so. Recoil is very mild. Just a fun fun gun to shoot. I do not own a 6.5 of any kind. This X3 in 270 is my go-to rifle for whitetail, mule deer, and black bear. I know it works well on cow elk, but I haven't yet hunted a bull elk with it. I had considered taking it to Africa next year for a plains game hunt but my PH strongly recommended I show up with something in the 30-cal range.
 
I am left handed so the options were limited. I really liked the looks of the Browning X-Bolt Hell's Canyon McMillan, but they are very, very limited production. I have actually never seen one in person. I decided that money was no option and had one built. Browning X-Bolt action, .277 24" Bartlein #3 barrel @ 24", McMillan Game Scout stock, Timney trigger, Leupold VX5HD 3-18 x 56 scope. I even had the entire rifle Ceracoted in burnt bronze. The only thing I lack is getting the stock dipped in ATAC-AU camo.

By the way, it shoots really good with ELD-X 145 grain bullets.

Take that Superior load and your .270 with you to Africa and you will be well-served. A lot of "hunters" that end up in Africa can't shoot worth a "Tinker's Darn". Many years ago a midwest farmer went there with a .270 and killed 19 animals with 20 shots (150-grain Partition). Enough said.

Haven't owned a .270 in years but can't really say why, as I have more DRT kills with a .270 than any other cartridge. I will likely have another .270 built one day, but when I do, it will probably have a 8.5" twist so I can shoot the Berger 170gr EOLs and similar as they are introduced.
