Bought a .270 Today

I've always been a fan of the .270 but haven't owned one in years. I've been piddling around my Hornady Ballistic app and comparing the .270 vs my 6.5 Creedmoor. One thing I've always liked about the .270 is how much performance it delivers for a semi mild recoil. I like the numbers a little better than the 6.5 CM. Plus the Tikka T3x Forest was being sold at cost so I got a deal. I also like the Tikka has a 22" barrel so good for the box blind and tree stand.

Anyone else a .270 fan?
My first rifle was a .270. Great gun. Flat shooter. I feel guilty everytime I open the safe to grab my 6.5 cm leaving the .270 behind. Bought it used - Ruger Model 77 L/H. Love that gun!

Great caliber and rifle. Look at hornady superformace . 7mm mag velocity out of a 270 with the recoil. Mule deer shoulder a 180 yards DRT.

I have 3 currently and wish I had a dozen more

I have a confession to make. If I own almost 10 guns chambered in 270 Win does that make me hoarder or some sort of sicko? I am almost ashamed to admit how many rifles I actually own. I fear I might have some sort of "hunting rifle fever" that I cannot shake. I can't help being attracted to the bolt-action rifles. Mind you I find the AR platform to be a hideous looking beast so I don't own any of them and I only own a single 9mm pistol for home/self defense. Is it possible I may be suffering from some disease? :)

Is this normal? Am I the only one who has two gun safes?
Seems normal to me.

700 stainless drop mag in 270win was the first rifle I bought for myself and still a favorite. I put in an old McMillan stock and added a Timney trigger. I gave the stock a paint job this summer (the original tupperware stock was stiffened, foam filled and painted first as a test case).

I added a new Trijicon Accupower and re-sighted it in. It shoots marginally well.

I got a Alamo Precision 700 custom in 270wby here last year and it is a hammer with 140 ABs and 130 partitions.

Might do a 270wsm fast-twist next.

I think the 6.5CM is great, too, but I love my 270's. Mine is a Barrett Fieldcraft which is a great combo with the Creedmoor. For whitetail hunting, I'm not sure that there is a better option to start a kid with than the Creedmoor, either (mine started with the 243 but I'd rather use 120-140 gr vs. 90-100 gr for WT).

I got my first bolt action rifle when I was 14, it was a M700 mountain rifle in .270. That's the same year I started reloading. I settled on 140 AB's about 20-25 years ago after trying Barnes 130's and BT's and haven't tried anything else since. It's still looks as good as new after 31 years, wood stock and all! I laughed about the guilty feeling grabbing something else. Might have to pull it out for whitetails this November.

Thats the same one I have and it still shoots great! I haven't reloaded for it yet but I will be trying a few recipe this winter. What's yours like as a load?
.270 notes

Base load
Nosler 140 gn Ballistic Tip
Remington brass
IMR 4350, 48.5 gn
Coal 3.340
Federal large rifle match primer
Barrel twist 1:10

I rarely use Remington brass, but I had some around. I wasn't going to load for it, but just keep it as a memory as my dad's deer rifle. I bought some cheap Remington Core locts to just prove it wasnt worth loading for and it shot .800! So I did some load development and got it down to .430 at 100. I'm sure with good brass, better match bullets and playing around with different powders, I could dial this down a bit more, but I'll take sub .500 for a grandkid hunting rifle.

Absolutely dig the old 270 Win. Have a couple in the safe and it is my "go to" rifle. 130 Berger H4831SC makes for a tack driver. Just a confidence booster and a pleasure to shoot!

G1 Sendero .270? Jealous!!!!!!!!!!! I'd be thinking new barrel 1:8, 26 or 28" to toss heavyweights on that platform!

I threw a 26" 1:8 twist proof sendero light barrel on my 270 and chambered it to 270 A.I., initial patterning (after I shot 2 shots not set up on the bipod properly) with 150gr Long Range Accubonds running at 3200 fps measured .325". Love it!

Ok now I am REALLY JEALOUS! Now I have my next build project! Have you tried RL26 with the 150 ABLR?

Sorry OP! The .270 is like an old flame that just won't burn out! I bet you will be looking at more soon!

Actually a youtuber who has a channel called HuntSimple (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCW-dy-2ouIHW1KqKcymIo8A) has done a comprehensive analysis of the 270 Win. You should check out his channel. Anyway he spent a year testing various loads for a number of 270 rifles and comparing them to him magnums. He calls it "Project 270". One of his enlightening conclusions (for my anyway) is that the 24 inch barrel does not offer any significant advantages compared to the 22 inch barrel for a 270 win. There just isn't enough powder capacity to take full advantage of the extra two inches of barrel length. I am a big fan of the 270 win rifle also but I admit I still prefer the 24 inch barrels even though I own some with a 22 inch barrel also.
I've watch all those as well really open my eyes up I quit hunting with a 270win over six years ago and now I have one again and I'm looking to buy another or build a 270 wsm with 1/9 twist

.270 has been my favorite caliber for years, I have an old pre 64 model 70 with 24" barrel and can't recall all the deer It's taken over the last 50 years, and still shoots 100yd. groups under an inch and I've managed to keep it looking pretty good but every scratch and ding has a memory of great hunting trips in the past, congrats on you new .270 you made a wise choice.
