I am having a 6.5 PRC being built on a 22inch 1:8 proof barrel. I have RL-26, H1000, and H4831sc powders. I haven't determined the bullet yet bc I don't het have the gun, but am interested in the 124gr HH, 127 LRX, or something like the 140gr Accubonds. I have CCI 250 and Fed215 primers on hand but wondering if for the 6.5 PRC I should invest in some Fed210?

What is everyone's experience with large rifle primers vs large magnum rifle primers for the 6.5 PRC?

Thanks in advance

I have a 6.5x06 24" 1/8 , stainless bbl on a Ruger action. I list this because both cartridges are near identical in performance. I use CCI #250 LR mag primers with Rel 26 & the Nosler 140gr AB bullet. My chrono reads 3075 FPS, & zero over pressure signs. A sweet , flat shooting load. Almost forgot to mention, sub 1/2" , three shot groups. This is a hunting rifle , not a competitive rig, I don't shoot barrel burning five shot groups.
Another load Ihave that also shoots great in this rifle is the Hammer 121gr ( designed for 1/8 twist ) using IMR - 4350, CCI #200 LR , for 3238 fps. Now I would guess H-4831 would come close to this velocity in a 24: Your's being a 22" bbl. might fall a bit short. Shot my elk with this bullet last season. One shot complete pas thru of both front shoulders.

if you can even find any primers of any size or type with the shortages, I would vote for faster powders like RL-16, H4831sc H4350 and 210s for 140 class and under.

Thank you for the info, once I receive the gun I will try different options as far as powder. Was just concerned about using magnum primers

I'm running CCI 250 LR mag primers in my 6.5 PRC w. H1000 and an accubond 140. Great numbers and great accuracy. I'm sure I could get away with the standard, but with the performance I've gotten and the cold weather I often hunt in, I don't see any reason to change things now.

I have some experience with 22" proof barrel and RL26. We have a 6.5 PRC running the 156 EOLs at 3000 fps. Heavy bolt lift using cci 250 primers but no heavy bolt when switching to cci 200. Same powder charge and velocity using both primers but no heavy bolt lift with the regular primers. As a general rule I load all PRCs with mag primers but it looks like regular primers will work fine and may be preferred with RL26 and heavies

Can't speak for the 6.5PRC, but I have done a lot of work with the comparable capacity 6.5x284. I have generally achieved better accuracy and lower ES using Fed210M's and CCIBR2's. I have observed that the hotter magnum primers will deliver about 30-50FPS additional velocity, which has required a reduction in powder charge when using loads near max pressure.

Generally, Hammer recommends mag primers with their bullets. In my 8 twist Proof PRC barrel I shot the smallest groups with the 124H bullet with H4831sc and Fed 215M primers.

this is a combo I had in mind. What was your load work up with this combo?

Do you have any experience with this at lighter bullet weights? If not would you expect that same result with a 140gr and under bullet?

I use all but the rl26 powders for my 300 saum with magnum primers. bullet weights from 165 to 200. The gun shoots!

I didn't get that much of a difference in fps, but otherwise that is the same as my experience with a 6.5 PRC: higher fps with the magnum primers, better SD/ES it's the regular primers.

Running Fed 210M in my 6.5 PRC. H1000 using max load data out of Hornady manual with 147 ELDM. My barrel speed increased 100 FPS at 200 rounds on the barrel. Now getting 3018, 26 inch barrel. I initially was getting "slow" velocities and wondered if I should switch to mag primers. Glad I didn't I'm getting exceptional accuracy and I've shot it out to 1100....

Thank you for the info. I am going to try and get some 210s
