So, a while back I remember a thread that got started about 'firearms you wished you'd never sold' (or something to that effect). This thread is similar to that, but a little more specific as to the situation/conditions. So, here it is. Let's say that you had inherited a firearm (in this case a near mint condition Smith & Wesson model 49 still in original factory box) from a close relative that had passed away and other than being a 'keepsake/sentiment/reminder' you really had no use for it. Do you hang on to it indefinitely simply out of respect or do you tell yourself that you're NOT selling your dearly departed family member (and you'll ALWAYS have the memories), but rather just an inanimate object and sell it/trade it for something you'd rather have/use instead? Of course, there's always just the 'keep it in the family' notion. My apologies for the 'Darker subject matter', but I'd really like to know how others feel about this. Thanks Gents.....Let's hear it.

Thanks for your input, Sir. Aside from memories that I cherish greatly and will always have I've never been one who associates/transfers those emotions/feelings to a particular object. Maybe I should? I don't know. Obviously there are no 'wrong answers' to this kind of thing and all view-points are welcome here. 👍

Sell it, get something that you have a use for or can get enjoyment out of. Maybe get something that you can enjoy with your family that will give you another good reason to spend more time with them.

I don't keep things that have sentimental value, those things are stressful to own. If it's not something I want to to sell, I give it to another family member that likes that sort of thing.

I've never placed value in objects other than what they are worth.

Spirits don't reside in materials.

Unless I had a real emotional attachment to it Like "my grandpas old squirrel gun" I would probably sell it for something more useful, especially something like a self defense weapon.
I can see that side of it.....on both accounts. This particular pistol is definitely a good one especially for the purposes of concealment.

Things that have sentimental value to families carry a certain amount of responsibility. In a sense, you don't own them, you just care for them until you pass them on. This is stressful to me, it's not enjoyable....it's a burden.
If something happens to this object while it's in my possession, it's not just me that is affected by it, it's everyone that sees the non existant value.
I think some people really do get enjoyment out of these objects, and that's great, they should keep them.
It's just silly to keep something that you don't get any benefit from owning because of some unrealistic value placed on it by others.
If you see the value, keep it.
If you don't, get rid if it.

Warning! This thread is more than 4 years ago old.
It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
