We've used the 140 eld-m/a-max exclusively for years. The most killing bullet ive ever seen. At creed velocities the I think the 147 will be just fine.

I will be leaving Saturday for an elk hunt. My wife's rifle and my rifle will be using the 147. Do I think it's the best choice, no. But my 300 win mag is out of commission and these 147's shoot absolutely lights out in my 24" Tikka ctr and under moa in my wife's christensen mesa. Both are creedmoors. My wife was getting consistent hits at 550 on a 12" gong and my ctr was making consistent hits at 850 as long as the wind didn't screw me up. I will get as close as possible but will not hesitate to take one under good conditions, prone, no wind and lots of time, out to 700. Call it a bad idea or not I'm ok with that. I know if I can do my part the elk will tip over.

I know exactly what you mean about the 147's shooting good. I can get consistent hits on a 16" gong at 700 yards out of my savage. I can't wait till the lakes freeze over so I can stretch it out further. Next to impossible in this thick bush country to find an open spot further than 700 yards. I love the bullet, just wasnt sure on it preformance on animals

What are everyone's thoughts on the ELD-M on deer sized game specifically on sub-100 yard shots? Is that too close to allow for quick expansion at these velocities?

I love the ELD-M, but NOT for short shots. In my timber rifle where I expect short shots (all below 200 yds) then I load Partitions.
Edit: To clarify, if your impact velocity is expected to be over about 2600 fps, there are better bullets than the ELD-M.

That's what I suspected. Unfortunately, I don't reload and factory options are still relatively limited for the 6.5 PRC. I'm planning on using the ELD-Xs for these sub 100 yard shots unless I can find a better factory option.

From articles I have read-match bullets don't open up consistently at that short of range due to their velocity. Unless handloaded and kept way under 2650fps. I'm not an expert, it's just what I have read. I was considering the same thing- I decided to go with the ELD-X

50 yards into a running coyote with a 6.5prc 147 eldm.....264 entrance hole in boiler room 6 inch exit.
125 yards boiler room whitetail w/143 eldx from 6.5 CM quarter sized exit
147 had no issues expanding for me. I also shot a beaver with it at 10 yards and it expanded on that poor soul as well

The 143s are a tack track driver outa my Tikka t3x lite out to 400, that's the longest range I have access to.

I hit a doe with the 143ELDX at 30yds last year, it took off her off her feet like a sledgehammer an left a fist sized exit.

Expansion with these bullets is not the problem.

I would use the 147 ELD-M over the 143 ELD-X personally. What speeds/cartridge? Speeds out of the Creedmoor shouldn't get to explosive with these at all. Turn up the heat in some wonder magnum and you might start to get problems.

Good clarification, thank you. The explosive possibility is why I'm leaning towards the ELD-X on whitetails on sub 100 yard shots to minimize meat loss.

I am a bit of a fan of a bullet expending all of its energy inside the organs of an animal as well. Make for quicker kills.
Just be sure to place the shot well. ..but...
Last season I hit a smallish fork horn Wt. Tail with Eldx at 90 yards ( muzzle vel. 2800) in the upper leg bone just below the shoulder joint. ( Deer was at a sharper angle to me than I realized ) could not find a piece of the bullet any bigger than just "shavings" for lack of a better word to describe it. It did completely shatter the bone but did not penetrate any further!
Left no blood trail and took over 3 hours to find him.
I am going to give the Barnes a try now.
Just my experience... Each to their own.
