Muzzleloader

For those of us who remember, muzzleloader season is supposed to be a primitive weapons season. I'll stick with my Lancaster County 54cal Flintlock. FFFg Black Powder under a patched round ball.

They used stuff like that in Viet Nam. Burned down everything in the way!! 😁

A round ball at 100 yards is doing maybe 900 fps and it penetrates clear through most animals and kills just fine. The MLs using 209 are moving a lot faster than that at 400. The hole is what kills, ME was a short hand that never actually worked.
Not trying to start an argument. Simply stating facts.
The mzl's we use have improved drastically in the last 10 yrs.
While some enjoy the nostalgia of muzzleloading others simply use them for firearms that are available during a specific season to kill animals.
If regulations don't prohibit u from using a modern day smokeless mzl and ur not a purest just seeking the challenge that conventional mzls provide then go the smokeless route. Nothing compares to them.
Just like the patch and round ball went by the wayside so too have the 209 shotgun primers for mzls.
Will they kill an animal ? Sure they will but there's been so much Improvement since then.

Although I shoot a modern muzzleloader I am fine with a much stricter definition of an acceptable firearm for a "primitive arms" season. I bought a T/C Hawken flintlock so I could hunt in PA's ML season but use a 209x50 ProHunter everywhere else. It's hard to resist using new technologies if they are permitted.

Problem is........ we're losing shooters one right after another and youngsters WANT modern.
The debate over primitive or modern is best left well alone.

There has been so much advancement in MLs whether its the projectiles, powders, ignition systems, optics, precision barrels, bolt actions, or other that they really can't be considered primitive arms. In the earlier days hunters just wanted an additional season for primitive arms. Today, many MLs shoot as good or better than many centerfire rifles.

It's not much different from the crossbow shooters who want to use their crossbow during the archery season. Where does all this end? One long season or a dozen short seasons for various stages of different hunting implements. There's a reason each state has different regs and its because there is no clear consensus as to where to draw the line. And even if there was, technology would have us constantly questioning if the line should be moved.

There doesn't need to be a line. I'm sure many still use a rotary dial phone instead of a smart phone. Or they're expressing their opinions on the modern internet instead of writing a letter. The only reason there are/is a line, is because one group wants it THEIR way.

Hunt with exactly what you want to hunt with. If you want to hunt with a flint, do so. If you want to hunt modern, do so. Same with the archers.... shoot and hunt with exactly what you want. I can assure everyone, I'm not going to complain because I hunt one way and someone else chooses a different method.

This division crap between processes is exactly what continues to divide. The NMLRA found that those that kept fighting for a division, were actually doing more harm. When the NMLRA opened up more shooting for modern inline rifles, membership started increasing.

you know what !! look at the opening question that sam berryhill asked !! he wanted to know what the guys were using for long range muzzleloader/builders suppliers/bullets/ignition not what is better or should use this or that primitive or modern its his money and how he spends it he was just asking about long range muzzleloader hunting

Would it be possible to do a remage prefit in 45cal smokeless muzzleloader with the arrowhead breech plug?

So based on your reply I take it that you would be in favor of a single season and everyone can shoot whatever they want. (no lines) While I respect your opinion I disagree and acknowledge that the various hunting implements require various degrees of skill and different seasons for them seem appropriate to me.

And while we are in discussion; thank you for your insight and suggestions on this site and others regarding muzzleloading. Your knowledge and feedback has been helpful.

It doesn't much matter to me whether one uses a bow , crossbow , traditional mzl , centerfire etc ...
I'm a hunter and love to hunt and enjoy the outdoors.
If my state opens up a deer season with a spear I'll be trying to buy a spear and practice with it.
In the end we're all predators.

But ..................... if the spear season was the same as the bigbore rifle season would you select the spear in a field full of hunters carrying 300 mags wearing 5-20 power optics? My guess is - no.

It NEVER fails. If a post is going to go south about muzzleloaders and the subject is long range, without fail, its always a traditionalist/s that starts stirring the pot. NEVER the other way around!

This is how this post got started and now we've got the traditionalists posting fire flying phots and telling everyone else only they do it right.

Hello all.with muzzleloader season just around the corner here in nc I was wondering who all on here hunts long range with muzzleloader and wonder what gear does every one use.ive notice that alot of company now offer long range muzzleloaders. I have a a tradition pursuit that I use that my grandpa gave me its nothing fancy but I've killed couple deer with it but want to buy a more suitable long range muzzleloader so that's on my list with few rifles as well
