245 berger bullets

Pondering on re-barreling a RUM to try this round. Pushing the 230 at 2910 with H1000 so I'd probably try N570 or RL33 to push it a little faster. Don't have the current twist to stabilize it for now.

Umm...how you figure?

I'd love to try em but I'm likely a little short on the twist.

I'm running the 230 berger at 2950 from a 30 nosler and ran it 3035 without pressure signs in a ladder test. I have the horsepower but the 10 twist is a little weak.

@TwistedFox The Berger's will expand reliably opposed to the SMKs closed and pointed meplat, and Berger's are always consistent and accurate. Results from the new SMKs make it seem that they are finicky and not as consistent on target as Berger's or older SMKs. On top of that, the Berger 245 has a higher BC than the 230 SMK.

+1 on the 230 SMK. You have nearly identical BC to the 245 berger plus you can run the SMK faster. For ELR targets I perfer the 197 SMK 7mm and the 230 30 over the heavy weight Bergers. As far as how they perform on game, I like the Bergers more. Depends on what you're trying to do.

.007 higher but is 15 grains heavier should have a higher bc then it does for the added weight that a loss of at least 125 fps from weight diffrence

Sierra is doing great things their 131 grain .257 their heavy 6.5 and heavy 7mm and yes their heavy 30 caliber berger is struggling to keep up as far as b.c. race .But yes i use berger bullets for hunting as well but then again i have never lost a critter with sireea match kings eather . There is no magical bullet that will make up for a poorly placed shot and any bullet will work just fine when placed properly Reguardless of bullet
makeup. As far as accurate berger and sierra and even barns and hornady are all easy to make super accurate one hole groups. its called load devlopment on a guality built rifle its very easy.

My friend tested 300smk in wet phone books and they are very random. Some expanded, others simply flattened lengthwise, while others looked like they could be reused. We used them out of an edge for years on elk and deer. Excellent on steel, horrible on animals even when hit in the boiler room. Easy to load accurately for sure. The Berger 300 came out and we switched but werent as easy to load develop. Just our experiences.

I tried the 245 berger out of my 300 WM. I used RE33, a 26" Browning x-bolt, and kept my OAL to the length of my standard mag, and it still managed to shoot up to 2800 FPS before I ran out of room in the case. No pressure signs. Still .200 off the lands. If I had an extended mag I would seriously consider these even in a 300 WM, not because I could get drastic ballistic improvements over the 215s, but because for moose and grizzly and even elk, more mass equals more energy and a better sectional density, likely resulting in better penetration on less than ideal shot angles, front shoulder hits etc. it actually slows down the muzzle velocity but improves the impact velocity, allowing for a larger window of ideal impact velocities. I would prefer a slower short range impact velocity with a heavier bullet should I get a 100 yard hunting shot while still having plenty of down range energy beyond 600 yards.

I am still waiting to heSr how they perform on animals elk sized and larger. The 215 berger does pretty good, but I have heard less than stellar results from the 7mm 195 berger. Just not expanding as reliably for some reason. Maybe for that bullet more attention needs to be paid to opening up that meplat a bit.

we shoot these out of 30xc 3250 ft/sec 7twist 30 inch barrel and find there G7 BC to as posted also out of a 30-378 bee 10 twist lose a bit of bc easy bullet to set up and very good accuracy

I've been wanting to try them out of my norma but my twist is 9.5 and they recommend 9. So far it's pushing the 215's upwards of 3200 without pressure so I should hopefully be able to keep the 245's in the 2950-3000 range
