7mm-08 Rem with H4350 or RL17?

I have yet to mess with it but the hybrid 100v might be in the running for the heavier bullets I have gotten good results with it in other calibers

I don't see it in any of the manuals I have, I vhecked the Hodgdon website and ot ahows speeds just under H4350 with 154gr bullets and a bit below both RL16 and RL17. Alao under all 3 with 160gr bullets but not much. Would be a good option to try and mostly with bulleta 160gr and up from what I gather. Thanks again

it's all in quickload . it's well worth the price .

I don't like working with fill percentages over 105% . I don't have staball6.5 powder , or I'd run it too .

using a 150gr berger , max powder loads , case fill % , FPS with 24"bbl

RL17 , 102.0 % case fill . 2915FPS

RL16 , 109.5% case fill , 2896 FPS

Hybrid 100v , 109.3% fill , 2823 FPS

H4350 , 108.0% fill , 2793FPS

Thanks jimbires, i appreciate the info. After reading and more research on RL16 that is more stable I'll get that one and also H4350 and go from there, will see what happens

Update:

I found some RL16 and H4350 at Brownells so I got a couple of pounds of each. Will try them out in a feq qeeka ans aee what happens

Thanks for all the help, stay safe and God bless.

Happy 4th of July all.

Well, looks like the guys have given you some good powder advice! Try some of those other powders in that 7-08 and get yerself an M1 to burn up some of that 4064!

Thanks. An M1 is definitely in my plans.

I still use the 4064 on my wife's rifle with the 120gr Balliatic tip and with the 139gr SST on mine. I'll just have to get some more Lol

Update on this:

In my wife's 7mm-08 with the 162gr A-Max the best group was 0.96" with 43.5gr of RL16, GM210M and a COAL of 2.82", not great but getting there. I tried loads with both RL16 and H4350 and this was the best one.

In my 7mm-08 with the 150gr Ballistic Tip best group with RL16 was at 0.65" with 46.0gr, GM210M and COAL of 2.80". With H4350 best group was 0.62" also with 46.0gr, same primer and COAL.

Overall with H4350 the loads grouped better than RL16 so I will fine tune this one and play a little with the COAL.

Last week I found a jug of RL17 so this will let me play a little more with my wife's rifle and see if I can get a better group with the A-Max. Also have some Berger 168gr HVLD's coming. Our son is 3 now and she wants to get back out there hunting with me and she wants to apply for Elk and Pronghorn next year so I want to have it ready for her in case we magically draw a tag.

Haven't checked speeds yet but will find out soon.

Again thank you all for the help and stay safe

My 7-08 is a Remington Model Seven SS with the factory 20" barrel. Varget gets the 120 grain NBTs going 3000fps with half MOA. Big Game gets the 140 grain Partitions going 2860fps with half MOA accuracy, as well.

RL16 was too compressed and slow for me.

Thanks N2TRKYS. I use IMR-4064 for 139gr SST(just under 2,800 fps) and 120gr Ballistic Tip (over 3,000 fps), the image on my avatar is from my wife's rifle with the 120gr BT and 4064.

I do plan on trying out Varget but first want to finish the 5 or 6 lbs I have left of 4064. RL17 seems to push 140gr class bullets faster like Big Game and I have some on the way already.

The 120 BT sure does a nice job on deer.

Thanks again and stay safe

For a long long time I've been using IMR-4064 for the lighter 120gr and 140gr bullets with great success and I still have quite a few pounds left of it, and for the heavier bullets ranging from 150gr to 168gr I've used IMR-4350, RL19 and IMR-4895 but I am running low on these powders.

I've decided I want to go with a temp stable powder that will also give me a little more juice. Looking at the Sierra, Nosler and Hornady manuals I saw that RL17 and H4350 are both up there. I also found that RL17 will also work good with 140gr bullets and provide more velocity than IMR-4064 and Varget.

I know some of you use these two powders on your 7mm-08's, so which one would work best with the mentioned heavier bullets? Or maybe try both?

Thanks in advance for the help and stay safe.
LV, I use Varget for lite bullets, 100-120. Also use cfe223. But for 140-168, I found that RL17 is tough to beat speed wise , and accurate too. Its temp sensitive though. I've fallen in love with RL16. It seems to not be as temp sensitive, and very accurate.

Thanks 7stw, hadn't seen you around in a while.

The fact that RL17 is temp sensitive is why I went ahead and tried RL16 and H4350 first and with good results, now I just need to play with it a little bit.

I did however order some RL17 that I found at Powder Valley last week. I can work around the temp sensitivity and I'll use it for hunting only if it groups well.

I still have to play with RL16 and H4350 a bit, but its looking good so far.

Thanks again

Yeah, my summer has been busy, stupid hot, and humid, so I dont shoot as often as I wish. Buts starting to cool alittle, and deer seasons around the corner.
I too like RL17, it shoots well, and the speed is up there. Gotta watch the fire cracking though. It will shoot the whole bullet weight range, from 100-168 no problem. The RL16 is very similar , not temp sensitive, and is said to have copper fouling resistance as well. Mine loves it with 150 grain bullets.

I've just started playing with RL16. So far it's been ok, haven't got it consistently under MOA. Could you share any details on your RL16 loads? Thanks
