Friend wants me to reload 270 win. With 130 grain bullets for his older model browning bar. Told him to try putting fired case backing gun to see if it would chamber and it did! Ejected it with the some small amount of effort. So now not sure if small base or standard base. If I measure unfired and fired cases in front of case head what amount of expansion is acceptable??

Don't have an answer to your question but would suggest SB dies simply for reliability. Not sure how accurate rifle is to begin with and conditions when fired. To maintain reliability in all conditions and leaving nothing on the table for velocity, again, I'd suggest the small base dies.

1st try a quality std die. I load ALL my semis with them, even a NM M-1 with no issues.

Redding or Forster.

1000s down the pipe, never a jam.

Small base dies will lead to premature case failure.

For hunting I always use new fully prepared brass.

My brother in law has a Remington 742 that would jam if factory ammunition was used (30-06). We loaded hand loads with small base dies and no more "jam-o-matic"

I have been hunting with a 270 browning bar for a long time. I have used both small base and full length dies. My choice is full length all day long. The dies I have set the shoulder back 3 thousands and that's more then enough. Get him some 130 game kings and IMR4350. Start at 53.5 and work your way up to max load. You will see good accuracy

How are Hornady sst bullets?

I never could get them to group in any of the Bars I reloaded for. Those rifles for some reason don't like tipped bullets. Sierra Gamekings, Nosler partitions, and Sierra Pro Hunters always give me the best accuracy.
