Did 6.5 PRC obsolete the 6.5 CM only to be made obsolete?

Well the 6.5 PRC replaces the 6.5 Needmore that killed the 260 Remington (that is superior to the creedmore). Advertising, Advertising ,Advertising and media Hype by Hornady and then now everybody has by one. Then Hornady swings their media blitz to the 6.5 PRC and every body wants one. In truth the PRC is a weak cousin to the 6.5 Remington Magnum that came out in 1966. History seems to repeat itself once again. Don't get me wrong I love all of the 6.5mm calibers and own all of the ones I listed above plus a few more Which one will I use today????
That is the question.
Once again it shows a cartridge with great potential hamstrung by the factory stuffing it in a short action.
If big green had planned the 6.5RM in a long action instead of a short it would still be loaded by the factories instead of a light weight has been.
The 6.5PRC may suffer the same fate in time.

Why do we ask about killing off a Cartridge instead of complementing one with another.
I do not play golf but it seems to me that people who do have more than one club.
One club complements another for the job it has to achieve the results desired.

When talking about the .264, 6.5 Rem Mag, and even the .260 they were all ahead of their time and components, and for that matter the internet. They did not have bullet options close to what we have today. Everybody didn't have a chrono or doppler. And if a gun scribe said a cartridge ate barrels and was to explosive it was doomed. Part of the reason some of these 2.0 cartridges are so successful is they get the advantage of hind-site and can fix the shortcomings of say a 9 twist that the .260 started with, and the .264 for that matter. And while there are alot more custom gun builders now than there were 25 years ago, most folks still go to their closest gun selling outlet and buy what's available in that store. I thinks both will remain and the PRC will never catch the Creed.

If you want more speed why not just build or buy a .264Winchester Magnum?
The .264 WM has been here since 1958, gives more speed than the PRC and components are available, if you can not find .264 WM brass, just make it from the 7mm Rem Mag.
But oh my goodness that 264 win mag has a belated case! That will never work! You know you don't have to reload if you choose not to! Most of my rifles have belted cases and I reload all of them The 264 win mag is a great round and will be my next rifle! Cheers all.

Had 2 creeds tried liking them but got bored with the fact they didn't really give me anything a 243 didn't in moderate distances and I prefer speed. Never been a short mag kind of guy so prc didn't do it for me either.

Always wanted a 264wm but the basically zero factory support squashed that. Now I'm eyeing a 6.5 rpm pretty hard. 264wm like performance and seems like almost as many factory ammo options right now (probably not but weatherby covered their bases pretty well with the 3 options they released so far). Now if only someone besides Winchester chambered rifles in 264.

At any rate different strokes for different folks but there's a pretty good chance I'll be adding a mark v 6.5rpm to the stable fairly soon.

True, I just looked at the price tag on a box of .264WM ammo $54.99 (Obama era prices)about 7 years ago.
I have plenty of 7mm RM Brass so I can take that brass to make my .264 WM ammo at a huge savings.
I have a 7 mag that needs a new barrel so that may just become my .264 WM.
Another action laying around so that may become a 6.5PRC just because I can, only time will tell.

Yea, I am in a holding pattern with a M700 270 I have in the safe. If the RPM takes off at all I will get a good barrel in that chambering, I believe custom barrel sales for std. headspace actions will really take off if we see quality brass at a decent price point. We shall see.

7-08 has excellent bullet options and recoil is manageable. Less recoil than the 7mm mag. More energy/speed than the 308. Very effective on big game. I have taken elk out past 500 yards. Better bullet ballistics than the 6.5 cm. But not by much. Shot placement is the deal breaker. 6.5 PRC like all the wsm calibers suit someone's preference. If the terrain and shots require LR shots 450 and beyond I pack my 300WM with 200gr Barnes LRX. Yes there are others who may disagree with my choice. But at 74 years old. A 100% Disabled Vietnam Combat Veteran, and 64 years of hunting experience. I believe knowledge, skills and abilities to get the job done over all those years has served me well.
