300WSM - 190 ABLR - Winner

Good stuff! I tried 185 VLD Hunter and just could'nt get good consistent groups.,Did the Berger seating depth etc just didn't happen. Love RL17 but believe it toasted my previous barrel throat so trying to stay away. I hope this wasn't anomaly and stays consistent. The barrel likes 200AB as well but only at 2825 so was hoping fir little more velocity. I also tried Speer 190 Impacts and they shot well but not as good as the ABLR. My 300WM Sendero puked on the ABLR but shoots 200AB great, So I keep trying just in case and glad I did.
I did find weight sorting the ABLRs helped some. They can be off some.

Perfect example of the rifle tells us what it wants and that one obviously is SCREAMING feed me more of that lol.

Muddy,
Toasted a 300 WSM with RL-17? How many rounds you figure? I'm actually not a fan of it. I bought 3 lbs 3 years ago and have around 2.5 lbs still on my reloading bench. I switched over to 26 and haven't looked back. I actually got the 200 ELDx and Berger 200.20x over 3000fps (3020 on both) but didn't want to keep pushing it, so I settled on a pretty flat node around 2930.

OK, once in a while the planets do seem to line up for me and I am very happy with the load I now have for my recent 300WSM build. First build and not very in depth from maxing out but was what I wanted to try to kick the tires on builds. Now I see what can be achieved and boy am I in trouble now. Heck, I may even build a .270WIN since that thread is not slowing down at all!

700 SA (stock action and bolt), Timney trigger, 26" Preferred barrel, Sendero contour, spiral fluted, 5R, 1:10 since I was going to shoot mostly 200 and less in it. The magazine has max of 2.95 so I asked Marshal of Preferred Barrel to throat at bottom end of SAAMI so I have better chance of chasing lands which was done perfectly and can chase most bullets and stay inside max COAL of magazine. Plus I can chase the throat a bit easier as round totals up.

190 ABLR
0.010 setback for CBTO of 2.251
COAL = 2.928
RL-16
3,016 fps averaged over 20 rounds
ES: 13 SD: 6 (20 rounds on target with two 10 round groups)

I'm loading 180 Scirocco II's in that chambering. Are you crunching powder when seating? SAAMI min chamber has bearing surface below the neck : shoulder, right?

Ross: I had over 1250 rounds through it and bet 75% were shot with RL17. The throat was UGLY! Which is what led me down the road to build this rifle off that receiver. AND stay away as much as I can from RL17 with this rifle.

Laguna, not compressing loads at all. The SAAMI throat still has plenty of "jump" to it. My mag has a 2.95 max COAL which under most circumstances with a 300WSM would not let me load close to lands if I so chose to do so. Most of my max CBTO and COAL end up right at the 2.95 or so but I do have a couple of bullets that do not have the sleeker secant so my COAL and CBTO is right at the 2.86 COAL which is OK for those bullets. They can cause compressed loads for certain powders but I do not use them in my 300WSM. I was trying to balance longer bullets, higher BC with the specifics of this rifle. There are trade off's to do everything and I decided to try this and so far seems to be working out fine for the specific bullets I want to shoot.

Interesting. That 190 ABLR is 0.031" longer than the 180 Scirocco II. In my first round of seating depth tests for my M70, I've got bearing surface below neck : shoulder. I don't believe I'm crunching powder but I'm at least 2-3 grains below potential max load.

It may be the powder of choice that is the possibility of avoiding compressed loads. I am sold on RL16 for the 300WSM and it takes far less to get velocity that most. I am using only 62.5 grains of RL16 with the 190 which is far less than most powders. I bet if I used RL26 it would definitely be a compressed load since it is with the 190 Impact. I then switched to RL16 and better load density etc. without compression. I do not like compressed loads so I adjust my powders to avoid them. Unless it is a ball powder than maybe depending upon caliber.

Disclaimer: This is a safe load in my rifle so I have to remind anyone you have to follow proper loading steps to establish a load and not copy anyone else's.

Is it bad to crunch powder?

Some believe compressed loads can break down the extruded kernels "possibly" affecting ES and SD. I just don't like it for personal reasons.
