Did 6.5 PRC obsolete the 6.5 CM only to be made obsolete?

Below is from Sportsman's Warehouse. # of different rifles they carry.

6.5 PRC is chambered the 5th most variety wise for what they stock. Think about that. How long have companies made 6.5 PRC rifles? Look a 6.5 CM, it has over twice the flavors as the 270 win.

6.5-284 is just a niche rifle..... nobody but reloaders use it for hunting. It isn't displacing 6.5 CM, 270, 7RM, 280ai, or 7-08 sales like the 6.5 PRC is.

I don't know hardly anyone that buys factory ammo,so your post means very little to anyone that actually shoots their rifles much because 90% of them load their own ammo.
Calling the 6.5-284 a niche round just shows how little you actually know,as well as the 6.5-06. You'd be quite surprised at the number of people that actually shoot them, and they will be around a lot longer than the 6.5 PRC.

Every year, there are new cartridges introduced to the market to boost new sales. Some are good, some fall flat. The ones that make it always offer the shooter something better than what they currently shoot, but the 6.5 PRC really doesn't do anything better than the 6.5-284 or the 6.5-06 other than coming in more varieties of factory ammo which doesn't mean anything to someone that reloads.

Maybe a better question is: will the 6.5 prc obsolete the 6.5-284, because it is the round that the prc is in direct competition with. Not necessarily the 6.5 creedmoor. Both are hunting rounds.
I've found a little bit of info on 6.5 PRC necked to 7mm. It's impressive. I shoot a 280 AI but if I were starting from scratch I'd look at it.

Sorry about knowing so little about 6.5-284, but I don't know anyone that has one.

Not sure how they are all getting along without one being it isn't a "niche" round?

Experiences vary man. To me 6.5-284 seems very niche to me. I don't know a single person that owns or uses one.

I use factory ammo AND I handload. Like many people, I own a decent amount of firearms. Not all of them have the same application, and honestly for some competitions, and most times for hunting even at distances the cartridge is terminally adequate for, handloading is not a necessity. It's more of a "I want to do it." Not like I ever saved money reloading.

6.5 cartridges has everyone's attention from the beginner on up through the long time rifle enthusiast. It will probably stay this way for a while. Eventually everyone who owns a rifle will have a 6.5 of some sort. I have more than one 6.5 cm, a 6.5 prc and a 6.5 saum. All of those are very useful for their intended purposes. There's so many 6.5 creedmoor rifles out there that it will never go away. But human nature make a person want something different from what everyone else already has. That's what keeps all the other cartridges alive.

It seems to me that Hornady might have killed off their own product.

Who is going to buy a 6.5 CM vs with the 6.5 PRC available now?

So I wonder if Hornady will decide to release a 7.0 PRC in 3 years after everyone upgrades their rifles from 6.5 CM to 6.5 PRC?

Maybe a smarter move would be a 6.8 PRC to shoot all the new round that they will be making for the .277 Fury? Imagine; 270 win level of power in a cartridge that comes factory barreled with 8 twist barrels!
Maybe the idea is to appreciate the CM and the PRC for what they each bring to the table.
Today the shooter/hunter can own both the CM and the PRC in a store bought rifle at a price tag that is amazingly low that will shoot right along some custom jobs for an 8th of the cost of some custom rifles.
The CM vs. PRC reminds me of the 7-08 vs. 7mm Mauser or the .30-30 vs. the .308 or the 6.5x55mmSE vs. the 6.5CM.
If you have one why do you need another caliber?
All of these will kill an Elk, just some will do it further back.
I have owned 6.5x55 SE for many years and have owned the 6.5CM now for several years now and enjoy it just like I enjoyed the.264 Win Mag and may build a PRC soon, they all are appreciated for what they each bring to the table.
Why not own both?
Whats not to love?

Yeah, we like to tell ourselves we are saving by reloading. I own about 6 or 7 presses, 70 sets of dies and all the accoutrements to go with them, about 6 no, 7 scales, enough brass to sink a ship but I am saving alright, HA HA. money

Yeah, I have people all of the time mention that I'm saving money by loading my own. They seem surprised when I tell them I'm spending more by loading my own.

If you only consider hunting PRC may displace the Creed. there are tons of shooters that don't hunt and don't understand the difference between the two and to be perfectly honest they won't see the difference.

Additionally if you consider gas guns it's easy to build on standard bolt face. Magnum bolt face in a gasser is an oddity.

I get 10 orders a week for a 6.5 CM and 4 orders a year for 6.5 PRC. Just saying....

Did you wake up today and decide to go full ret*rd? Or was it something that just happened throughout the course of the day?... serious question.

This would be like someone asking if Ford will sell less F150s because they decided offer the Medium Duty F450 with traditional Crew Cab with a normal bed... after all they are both pickup trucks with seating for 6/7 and both have a bed.

I guess the 308 and 7-08 are dead too since there's also a 7Rem Mag and 300 WinMag available. Heck.. even the vauted 270 is dead because Winchester decided to launch the 270WSM.

Not everybody wants more speed or the associated recoil. The 6.5 does everything most hunters and shooters require except possibly enough energy for long range kills. I dont think the Weatherby magnum made the 270 Win obsolete and the 308 Win still has lots of fans despite 30-06 and 30 caliber magnum availability.
