Have opportunity to get one from a pawn shop. Rem 700 remmage looks like 26" stainless with bias brake, manners stock , with rings. For $1k out the door. Told myself I would wait till I got the funds for a 300winny but it is calling my name. I have long way to go before i get into the meat and potatoes of long range hunting. Would this be good option to get started. It is in really good condition. No dents, scratches etc action is clean considering pawn shop. I keep reading posts about this cartridge and I'm thinking I maybe passing up opportunity.

Do apologize wasn't sure where to put it. Thanks for moving it.

You know or have an educated guess who the barrel manuf. is? Depending on what manners model it is you could potentially be near 1k in the stock alone. 280 AI is a very viable long range caliber. Some good factory ammo too, Hornady, nosler and federal premium with a 168 Berger, even better if you reload. If I had the coin I'd do it. Worst case you have a great stock and action to put a barrel of your choosing on.

Not 100% on the barrel. I'm sure its under the barrel nut. As for the stock l believe is close to 1k. At least that's what the guy behind counter said and did my own research. This would put me right on my budget. I have a magnum action I thought I could build later. Got my 30-06 for brush busting, this would be nice intermediate. Then build big toy later.

Check the throat for wear....
Yes I thought of that as well. Unfortunately I do not have a scope. Quick back story. This rifle was available at PS as a unknown cartridge I tried to get them down but it sold. It was taken to Gunsmith and chamber cast done to find what it was. He brought it back it was not what he wanted. So now PS has more info so price goes up. Maybe possible that GS could tell me from casting if it is bad. I'm not sure if that is possible.

Yeah....wait'em out...every chance you can walk in there and lay down less cash....they don't want to lose a chance for a sell..nothing in a pawnshop is guaranteed....unless you sicker into a better price with accuracy guarantee....

With regards to the throat, you might want to check out the cheap borescopes on Amazon. I have one from "Depstech" that connects to my phone via wifi ... great for pawn shops, gun shows, etc. for check used rifles. I have heard great things about the Teslong that is the subject of this thread:

I would say the Testing is inexpensive....not to "cheap"...as many on here will testify..its more than worthy of the $50....would have been a steal at $25....

I know nothing about guns but what I read and what I am reading is that because of this Virus there is a shortage of guns and ammo. I would wait and hope it comes down and its still there. I think you are wrong in your assumption once more was discovered about the rifle the less the guy wanted it, he walked away. At the end of the day you have to live with yourself, can you if you don't buy it?

Walking away after getting cast then trading it back in for something else. Could be assumption. As for living with myself and not buying it is not a problem. After some reading etc.. I come to the conclusion imo that dealing with Ackly cartridges is a pain and not really worth the hassle again imo.

Actually, the 280 AI is very easy to load develop and an excellent cartridge. I built one earlier this year. You have plenty of available headstamped brass by Nosler, and now, Petersen.
