Barrel cleaning: Sweet’s 7.62 with CLP follow-up

Will not use any thing with ammonia. Prefer to let a solvent soak overnight. Use only patches or nylon brush. Have found Bore Tech products to be the best for my use. Love the copper remover. I am not a competition shooter, so do not need to hurry cleaning a gun. For long term storage, run a patch with Rig gun grease through the bore.

I use sweets to remove copper with 10 passes and it always leaves the gray that your are seeing it usually thick gray paste on first patch's and then I run hoppes no 9 through the bore and it cleans right up with patches

Tried something about 2 weeks ago that really opened my eyes....CLR on a stainless barrel, after I thought it was clean......and before all the nay sayers start about the steel coloring the patch, I did the rub test on the bbl and nothing.....after Bore tec carbon and copper remover alternating , ran CLR, patch was black! Not saying that it's for everybody, and I don't know about chromemoly, but it works on carbon in stainless bbl's.....and this is on a Bartlien bbl....shot a match today, 200,300,385,500 meters, and came in 2nd.....so it doesn't do to much bad to it....rsbhunter

I run Carb cleaner for carbon, followed by Hoppe's No.9 that gives me an indication of copper. I do wet patch, scrub with patches only, dry patch scrub and alternate until no more black. If bore looks bright and shiny then that's it for me. I only scrub out copper when I want to check throat erosion.
I am new to JB bore paste, it really comes out black, even on a NEW UNFIRED BARREL.
Why is this??

From what I understand, it (jb) is a very mild abrasive...the black is from bbl micro particles...but that could be erroneous information...however, I heard if you rub a stainless steel barrel on the outside with jb, it will do the same, turn black....someone a lot smarter than me will hopefully post up a more complete explanation...rsbhunter

Sweets 7.62 doesn't dissolve carbon.

This is interesting. I searched and learned after I read this comment last night after you posted, you're right.
So if carbon cannot be dissolved, what is the purpose of the cleaners? Is it just finding the one that breaks the bond between the carbon and steel the best?

Try KG products from Midway. Step one carbon remover until clean. Step two copper remover. Research it. Best copper remover on market. Flush between cleaners with their solvent. All non corrosives. Ammonia is nasty to work with and too corrosive to put in an expensive firearm.

I did an experiment the other day. Like most people, I assumed carb cleaner would dissolve/clean anything that COULD be dissolved/cleaned. So I thoroughly cleaned one of my rifles with a name brand carb cleaner. Then I cleaned it again using home brewed "Ed's Red".

I was amazed!! Black patch after black patch came out of the supposedly clean barrel using the Ed's Red. That stuff flat wotks guys! Apparently it was secretly tested in a goverment lab, and out performed the government approved cleaners.

Carb cleaner lifts the carbon, ammonia dissolves copper, but not steel. I left Sweets on a steel plate for several months, no corrosion was present. Powder fouling absorbs moisture from the air, which is why I clean this out, but not copper.
I have heard people blame Sweet's for pitting the barrel, it's the moisture it pulls from the air that could be the culprit, since it is water soluble.

Aye... I was under the impression that it did.
In that case, dissolve the carbon before going to the Sweet's? Or do I need to alternate between the two?

I just tried something completely different Easy Off oven cleaner! I used a tight nylon brush worked it for 10 times through let it set for about 5 min and when I ran the patch it looked like black tar oozing out! Did this 3 times then Hoppy's 9 and Sweets then breakfree. Looked boss, with my Teslong. Don't get me wrong it doesn't look like it has never been fired but no copper with a few traces of carbon is still visable in the groves.

One of the range masters I talk with mentioned that. He said he lets his sit in the barrel overnight. Safe to do so in your experience?
