When I read your OP, I first wondered about the chambering. Because she is already a shooter, you might be ok with a magnum or higher velocity non-magnum but you might not. You might think about going old school, used, in case she doesn't like the first one. You know, feminine mind-changing and all. .243, .270, 7mm-08, .308 all come to mind as light recoiling effective chamberings.

On the other hand, we all like folks who contribute lightly used bad-@$$ magnum rifles to the used firearms market. That's how I got a screamin' deal on an introductory year Model 70 FW 300 WSM. Looks like it might have fired a box of ammo and the LOP was 13". Sure, I had to make a butt spacer but it just dressed up an already very sexy rifle.

LaHunter, since I have lots of experience with both 270 Win and 270 WSM I can say without hesitation that the 400 yard shots can be accomplished easily with 270 Win 120 grain Barnes, Hornady Innerbond or SST (if they still make them) or 130 Nosler, Winchester silvertip, Hornady SST, Berger hunter.
Personally the 270 WSM flings the heavier slugs best.. the 130 and 135 are the lightest I would use for efficiency. but you can use the 110 and 120's as well. I have used the 130's in the WSM case with great success. I still like the 120 and 130 Barnes and Nosler in the standard win case but they work equally as good in the WSM case with less aggressive recoil.

This all started about 18mo ago when I started down the road of getting parts to build my own rifle, now she is interested in this whole build a rifle specifically for her where she picks the stock and we all know way more importantly the "stock Color and pattern" and also getting to pick what cherakote she gets to color the action...... I decided that I wanted it to be a short action round that I would use a long action to build on so I wouldn't have to worry about COAL if we did shoot the heavies. I and she also wanted it to be a light rifle and one "she" and not myself could carry to the stand(we walk about 300 yds from my dads house to "her" stand, lol) and I know what this is really about so that's why I say this Gun is about 40% what I want also. I am just excited that she has taken atleast this much interest into guns, because if I get her all hooked I know my 4yo lil boy and then my 7mo lil girl will just follow inline with us to the woods . I am hearing y'all about the non magnum! I may really look back at the 260 and the 6.5-284 which are my fav two non magnum short cases.

Lahunter, The 6.5 PRC is a great choice to consider. Shoots well with light to heavy bullets.
I have a 21" barrel on mine, shoots factory Hornady ammo quite well. I run custom Unknown Munitions 156,s in mine.
124 Hammers shot well also.
Very versatile & comfortable to shoot with the muzzle brake.
Consider trying a 20-22" Bartlein carbon #4 contour, in a 1 in 7.5 twist.
Also a suppressor will make the wife smile

Here's an idea for the 40%. You can buy a Mossberg Patriot Predator in 6.5 PRC for 400 bucks. That way you and the wife can try it out to your hearts' content. If it's a no-go you can send it down the road. Reports I have read have been favorable to the rifle, and the cartridge is very tractable. I think it may be even bigger than the Creed.

MY personal view is that the Short magnums are on the way out. The action is not good for anything else other than another Short Magnum. The prime consideration for your wife should be recoil/ Rifle fit and weight. If she does not feel comfortable with the recoil then she will loose interest quickly. The 6.5 Creedmoor leads the way in sales hype and when its all said and done I think the 7 M 08 would be a good cartridge for her or even the 260 Remington, and even these calibers have more recoil than most women would feel comfortable with unless you are really building a rifle for yourself.
There are exceptions to the rule but she is better off with something she shoots well than something that she feels uncomfortable with. VaughnG

If the 6.5C is the mini van then I guess the 308 is the station wagon.

Do your wife a favor and please do not put a timney trigger in her weapon . Put an Arnold Jewel in it , they are worth every penny you spend on them!

The rifle will be a shorter/lighter build so that it's easy for her to handle, I will list the components I am thinking then ask the questions.

I don't know why the 150ish 6.5s and the 170 270s peak my interest but since it's not a long range rifle and a shorter barrel I may need a lighter bullet weight.

Get a copper bullet such as the Barnes. The higher velocity 270 with a 110gr TTSX BT will kill everything with horns/antlers in North America. All with great expansion. This lighter bullet will have less recoil; which will be a factor with a lighter rifle with a short barrel. If you go with the 6.5 then the 129gr TTSX BT would function the same. All the best. Also who wants all that lead contaminating your meat. Copper is way to go.

I've got a lightweight 300 wsm with a 22" benchmark barrel. It shoots everything from 110 grain hp's to 185 grain Berger vld's amazing. Choose the right twist and you should be fine with either cartridge. My 270 wsm favors lighter bullets with its twist I believe 1/10 but I've only tried 2 bullet combinations in it so far.

My wife has a bunch of rifles that I can "grab and go!" Many she doesn't even realize she has!

I know you like the over the counter ammo...make a list so you dont forget your ammo...then build her a 6.5-06 (my wife has one ) I liked "her's" so much I built one for myself.

She is the only one of us to have shot anything with both of them! She used mine on the 4th of July weekend to shoot her Aoudad at 381 yards!

Although the 6.5 PRC is pretty sweet. Shot a buddies a couple weeks ago with factory ammo...unreal accuracy!
