I would like to build a 6.5 wildcat cartidge based on the 7mm WSM case. I plan on necking the 7mm WSM case to 6.5 and then fire forming the case shoulder out to 40 degrees. Has anyone tried this or heard of anyone who has tried it? I have heard of 300 WSM and
270 WSM necked down to 6.5 (basically the same result with either one) but am unable to find anything on wildcatting the 7mm WSM.
Planning on using a Savage 10, 11 or 16 or Rem 700 or Win 70 action. Any thoughts on this cartidge and rifle build?
Thanks for any input .... Nick Novak

I've got a 6.5x300wsm and I love this cartridge it shoots awesome great for a hunting round not one to sit at the bench and bang away with.
I believe the 7wsm is about .040 longer at the shoulder and I bet they do that so you can't chamber one in a 300wsm
My advise is to stay on the 300-270 wsm line because of brass and die availability if nothing else. Right now Norma is your best option hopefully ADG or Peterson come out with brass. 0n brass i use Winchester but I have to do a full case prep on it. For dies all you have to do is use a 300wsm bushing die and if you use expanders then have the 6.5 one installed.
I wouldn't go the unturned neck route to thick of necks they will be about. 016 to hard to control neck tension. My second go round with a .296 neck chamber and .292 loaded round works great.
I would also suggest .180- .200 freebore for 140 class and up bullets.

Not being a smartass but what is the advantage over a 6.5 Remington Magnum, 6.5 PRC in short actions or .264 Winchester, 6.5 Nosler in a long action. I understand people like a challenge, but is there an advantage?

IMO the smart reloader should pretend like it's not even there so why even have one? One can get case head separations with or without a belt so the solution to that is to fire form the case to fit the chamber if it turns out your chamber is too deep.

Bingo!

Shorter action means lighter rifle over the long action ones (I hunt in the mountains of Arizona) and as for the PCR and RM there is very little advantage (at least not that the deer will notice) but it gives me a chance to have a custom rifle in a wildcat cartridge not of the norm. I cust reload all my ammo, including target and hunting. That is why I asked if anyone had ever heard of this custom wildcat. I have left posts on other forums and have received little feed back and thought I would try Long Range Hunting as a last resort.

A couple years ago I looked into a 6.5-270WSM, but found out it's something of a barrel burner [the price you pay for wanting a barn burner] so I opted for another 6.5-06 and also one in AI. If you're going to use a long action then you mite as swell have an 06 based cartridge instead of that wildcat or a 6.5-284. The 270 WSM case is also fatter than the .284.

You are correct about the 7mm not chambering in 270/300 WSM. I have a small supply of Hornady match cases in 7mm a got from a friend who no longer shoots high power. I agree with you on the neck sizing and we will use a .296 chamber reamer. Also, thanks for the tip on seating 140's and freebore setup.
