7 wsm in S/A?

So based on the advice, some things to try to gain 50-100 fps with the 180 class bullet-
Stay with 7 saum but get a 26" barrel, 8.4 twist.(proof)
Try RL 26 if I can ever find it šŸ˜„
Rechamber to a 7 SS
Rechamber to a 7 WSM but not get its full potential

Or a combo of all of that to maximize my S/A
 
You could always have a Smith install a 3.2 Baney box if you want the 7wsm or sell the action and get a Tikka or custom like the Tenacity.
 
I currently have a 7 SAUM in a custom MPA rifle, 1:9 twist CA 24" barrel. It's built on a short action with wyatts extended mag box. This allows me to seat bullets out to 2.990". Does great with the 162 eldm at 2900

I'm thinking when I need a new barrel next year, to upgrade the performance a bit to shoot the heavier 180 eldm or 184 Berger or even the 195 eol. I will need a 1:8 twist and was considering changing the chambering to a 7wsm to get the extra powder to push them easily to 2900-2950?

I know of the 7 Sherman Short as well may do that but not sure if I'm ready to go wildcat, plus the WSM in theory holds more powder anyway.

for those who know will the 2.990" coal give me enough room in the WSM case? Will that be a step up from the SAUM case for the heavies?
I shoot 180 burgers out of my SAUM with a COAL of 2.900, 2,700 FPS with a 20" Proof, 1:8 twist. It shoots much better than my ability.
 
Would be nice if there was some RL 26 to try! When was the last time it has been available šŸ˜•? What's your barrel length?

been using H4831 with great accuracy. Rl 23 and H1000 are faster but hit pressure quickly and not as accurate in this rifle. The 180 eldm gets a heavy bolt at 2780 ish

If I go for the 180 eldm it needs a 1:8 twist so will need to change barrels anyway, just thinking of chamber options and throats...

In looking at the published numbers (I know Berger has issues with Hornadys numbers, but that's probably since it makes theirs look bad šŸ˜). But this is what I currently have in 7mm-

the 162 eldm BC is 0.670
the 180 eldm BC is 0.777
The 190 A-tip BC is 0.838

the Berger 180 vld is 0.673
the Berger 180 hybrid is 0.680
The Berger 184 hybrid is 0.695
The Berger 190 LR hybrid is 0.751

so based on the "numbers" the best improvement for velocity trade off would be the 180 eldm.... going to the 180 vld wouldn't improve BC but would just slow down the bullet....
For the record the actual BC on my 180 ELDms from a 1:8 at 1000 feet elevation started at 3020 FPS is .716 not .777 like hornady says.

Their 190 A Tip in my 7rum started at 3200 FPS is not .838 it's .790 from a 1:7.5.

Hornady published BCs are not what they say they are. However the 197 and 183 Sierras are spot on. And my 195 Bergers are coming in a shade under published BC.

I knew someone would bring this up :). I am still new at LR and not even close to ELR. I have had good luck with Hornady's 4dof app and the 162 eldm, but thats only testing out to 625yds. from my understanding the app compensates actual BC based of the parameters of your specific load. I only can use published data to compare bullets to each other.

They are excellent bullets but they are not as many miles ahead as they would like to be. At least not in my conditions.

I know it's splitting hairs, but what is the best way to evaluate Velocity vs BC in choosing a bullet? I'm sure its based on the intended target/animal and expected max distance, energy requirements etc. If both will be adequate, when do you trade off say 8" more drop for 4" less of wind drift? is there a minimum MV velocity you like to see?

Doesn't matter if you have to dial say 5 more clicks at 1000 waaaay more important to know EXACTLY HOW MANY.
Second ask yourself can you make the call at 1000 to accurately hold 10" or 15" of wind.
The bullet your shooting accurately and having it figured out is waaay more important than worrying about splitting hairs.

I always vote for all the wind defection I can get. Obviously the gun has to choose what bullet it will shoot, but all things being equal I'll take a .755 BC @ 2900 over a .700 @ 3050.

Field shots on game happen fast and as long as you get a solid range there's no reason to miss your elevation. Calling the wind at 682 yards when it's swinging from 10 mph to 20 mph, I take all the BC I can get. Nothing is worse than a gut shot trophy animal.

IMO as long as you have a good bullet with descent BC it doesn't matter. If it is a .6 or .7 you still have to get your wind call right at long distance. Don't get caught up into dissecting the numbers. Get your load,run the numbers on it so you have enough FPS for your bullet to operate at your furthest distance, Go practice shooting. Wind calls are all about practice
