I have a 270 WSM in a winchester featherlite I bought it new right when they came out with WSM line it never shot good & had feeding issues so I have long since moved on from this rifle. I got thinking I might as well build something off this action so I am looking for some ideas on what cartridge to go with I'd prefer to go with something that has good availability of quality off the shelf ammo wouldn't want to go smaller than .243 or bigger than 30 cal. I already have a 6.5 PRC so it's out of the running

If you want ot stick with the shirt fatty magnums why not just do another 270 WSM, it's a great round you just had a bad barrell. The 300 WSM is another great option. Both have a decent amount of ammo available

If you are ok with long action magnums and want a cartridge with more ammo availability then go with a 7mm Rem Mag or a 300 Win Mag, both great cartridges.

Hope this helps and stay safe

7 SAUM or 7 SS. Have a 7 SAUM that I love! Have parts to build a 7 SS and just ordered brass and dies from Rich yesterday.

"IF" you define your intended purpose, hunting (what game and how far) or target shooting, and of course consider what you already have in your inventory (i.e., 6.5 PRC) it might help you in your decision-making process.

I too bought a Winchester Featherweight in 270 WSM. It barely made MOA when new. Then I got a new recessed target crown and bedded the stock. Now it shoots 0.375 MOA, year after year after year. So before you change the barrel, why not try a new crown and some bedding. If that doesn't work, then you have nothing to lose but to try a new barrel. But there's nothing wrong with the Model 70 action that some truing couldn't improve.

I agree with Jon. I have an early model (1983) Win. Featherweight in .270 win. After glass bedding and free floating the barrel and a little tweak on the trigger, it shoots MOA (usually better) out to 400 yards (my limit for this rifle and load). Might be worth bedding, trigger job and if needed a new crown. Depends on what you want to do. A new build is always fun but will cost a lot more.
