I currently have a 7 SAUM in a custom MPA rifle, 1:9 twist CA 24" barrel. It's built on a short action with wyatts extended mag box. This allows me to seat bullets out to 2.990". Does great with the 162 eldm at 2900

I'm thinking when I need a new barrel next year, to upgrade the performance a bit to shoot the heavier 180 eldm or 184 Berger or even the 195 eol. I will need a 1:8 twist and was considering changing the chambering to a 7wsm to get the extra powder to push them easily to 2900-2950?

I know of the 7 Sherman Short as well may do that but not sure if I'm ready to go wildcat, plus the WSM in theory holds more powder anyway.

for those who know will the 2.990" coal give me enough room in the WSM case? Will that be a step up from the SAUM case for the heavies?

I suspect you will have alot of bearing surface stuffed in the case at 2.99
For example I'm at 3.08 with a 140 berger in my 6.5x300wsm seated with the boatail bearing surface just above the neck shoulder junction.

I did the math on the 184 seated with the boatail bearing surface at the neck shoulder junction.
7wsm case to neck. 1.857
OAL Berger 184. 1.575
Boatail of 184. - .225

O.A.L. 3.207

Does 2.990 put you even or above the neck junction with the 162 eldm in a saum? Im contemplating that cartridge & bullet combo in a model seven but I don't think 2.990 would ever fit in a model 7 mag box and I dont know if a wyatts will go in a model 7.

This is what I have

I shoot the 180 Berger's with rl26 out of my 7 Saum on a Stiller predator short action and a COL right 2.926. I didn't think this was doable when I started the build but the builder guaranteed it would get over 2900. Chronod it today now that the barrel is broken in and shot 3007 FPS average with Es 12 and sd of 5. From my understanding a WSM SHOULD outpace the Saum?

Would be nice if there was some RL 26 to try! When was the last time it has been available 😕? What's your barrel length?

been using H4831 with great accuracy. Rl 23 and H1000 are faster but hit pressure quickly and not as accurate in this rifle. The 180 eldm gets a heavy bolt at 2780 ish

If I go for the 180 eldm it needs a 1:8 twist so will need to change barrels anyway, just thinking of chamber options and throats...
