So Will the .270 Win Overtake the CM's and PRC's?

Are you buying it in the sig rifle? If not, it'll be interesting to see how a normal action/barrel stands up to that kind of pressure. From what I've read of the sig rifle, it's pretty beefy and overbuilt compared to something like a rem700 or RPR
My gun dealer said it's the real deal. I've put the $500 deposit on the Sig Sauer 6.5CM. I Might even keep the 6.5 in its original configuration too.

Not to derail the thread,but...is nitride the best option for a barrel? Every barrel maker I've talked to about this says dont...

I've been making plastic and rubber part manufacturing molds for a decade. Nitriding is a tremendously durable steel treatment. Go .005" deep, low temp so don't have to worry about dimensional stability after you've already made very precise cuts.

I almost wish that I had a legimate and/or honest opinion about the .270W, but I don't. I just like the 30-06 and never felt the need for the 270. when I was a kid, I thought the sun rose and set on Jack O'Conner. I can't think of anyone who championed the .270 more than him. But even he could not make me a .270 fan. I will not argue withor insult a .270 fan. Everybody has an opinion and you have valid points about the .270. In the end, what matters is what makes you happy. So, enjoy your .270 and the heck with everyone else. By the way, I'm seriously considering a .280 Ackley improved. Hmmmm, have you considered a .270 improved?

Been there, done that. Everyone will want to experience it themselves but there's more performance upgrade ackleying the .280. Didn't see much improvement in the AI .270. Turned out more work than reward.

It was bound to happen that, sooner or later, the .270 Win would be the beneficiary of the high-BC projectile push of recent years. I have always thought of that cartridge as one of the top hunting cartridges, and routinely shoot mine at the long range area of our club to the interest of other members. Seems like the older members quietly nod when I tell them what I'm shooting. The younger members are mostly CM guys and would offer me all of the reasons that the .270 is old hat if I was inclined to listen. I am still a devout 6.5x55 and .284 Wwin guy, but do love my .270 Win, .243 Win, and .30-06. I would put any of them up against a competing cartridge and not be concerned about leaving something on the table. I imagine that .270 Win factory ammo is still more ubiquitous than 6.5 CM, and likely less expensive.

Pairing the cartridge with a low-drag target projectile would be a lot of fun. May be a project for a future barrel. My 1:10 is getting shot out, anyway. Give me something with a BC of .58-ish and a barrel to spin it. Oh, and give me a good muzzle brake.

The 270 with even the 130 Ballistic Tips is no slouch. A buddy takes his out west prairie dogging and made several 1500 yard hits. BC isn't great with that bullet but three pretty cheap and he has the gun dialed in. Wind isn't nice so it's not like he's making one shot kills but he regularly hits a small poly cooler (8"x12") at over 1000 yards. It's his zero target prior to shooting dogs. Easy to see impacts as it rolls over. He has a 300 RUM for days when Ma nature isn't nice.

I went with the best of both worlds and stuffed a 277 bullet in a creedmoor case. 140 Tipped Gamechanger at 2800fps from a 24"barrel. Not earth shattering but works for me as a medium range deer gun.
So what do we have? A Long action, 26"+ barrels, faster twist barrels, high BC heavy bullets, low recoil, brass CHEAP, brass neck is wonderful for longer higher BC bullets, RL26 pixie dust, every manufacturer has a .270 in current configuration of 1:10 BUT with advent of the higher BC bullets, heavier and need for faster twist barrels, is this the next NEW caliber to win over everybody?

Heck, my 24" sporter barrel is shooting 150 ABLR at 3075 fps with RL26 with absolutely no pressure so what will a 26"+ do with faster twist for heavier higher BC bullets? Recoil is actually pleasant and can shoot all day for probably anyone. The downrange ballistics are pretty darn good with the higher velocity, higher BC, heavier bullets that the .270 Win can actually do with faster twist and RL26 pixie dust.

So what do you think? Does the old girl have a chance? I do. Then again, Hornady has not branded it as a CM or PRC so probably no chance:eek: at all.

This is my next build!;)👍
Well, the 270 Winchester is still in the top 10 most popular deer/elk cartridges list in sales and use, so I guess it and the 30-06 will be around a while.

I shot this 100y group yesterday during load work up for my son's new Sako A7 270 Win. Bought 2 of these on clearance.

I agree. Like I've stated before I'm over the moon at the opportunity to have the .270Win in my gun safe. I'll be even more excited to shoot this rifle as soon as i receive the Norma Brass. Because I've won this Savage Axis II Overwatch with a 20" barrel, it'll likely only take 95-140gr pills and struggle to hit 3000FPS. However, it will likely only see hunting action out to 300M {mainly deer & bear). As I love to hand load it will likely be tested out well beyond this distance though. The Sako finnlight in 6.5 CM RELUCTANTLY will be DWs (Da Wife's) hunting rifle.

These were shot a month or so ago with the twin of the above 270 Sako A7 rifle.

Now belongs to my friend. 130 TTSX with H4350. Both rifles have identical 350.00 on sale Leupold vx3i 4.5-15x40 scopes. My 2 custom hunting rifles with German optics shoot absolutely no better than these factory rifles With mid-priced Leupold scopes.

I am sure you would be better off using the non improved just add 2" to your bbl. and Jack O like the 280 but it was late by about 30 years and the factory loads are set for 46 000 cup vs 51 000 for the 270.

you are correct you cannot improve a 270 win. it is the max for the 277 bore.. even the weatherby has a 2" longer bbl to get a little more vel.
