Hello,
I'm building a 300PRC and until all the components arrive I have a quick question for the group.
All things being equal and assuming 1000yds target, what is the downside of having an 8 vs slower twist rate in a 26in barrel?
TIA

I went 1:9.3" and I do not see any upside of spinning it faster to shoot the kind of bullets I intend to shoot.

I went with an 8 twist because I want to try those very long bullets - it's just a theory based on a small article I read in Berger's website. I noticed there are quite a few people that built a 300prc and wanted to get their thoughts as well.

Your theory is good, and your choice of 1:8" twist is fine. The 1:10" 300 Win Mag era is history. There are still a lot of 1:10" blanks out there, but with 225gr and greater (250gr A-Tip Match @ 1:8.5" rec'd), one needs faster twists. I learned the value of faster twists stabilizing heavier bullets with my .223's.

Yep-that's why I went with the 300prc-totally bypass the antiquated status quo. Why would it be so hard for manufacturers to turn out 1/9 twist win mags? Nope-gotta be 1/10 or 11 cause that's what it's always been

I'm guessing the cost of change - new processes, tools, etc. Let be honest a Tikka T3 is $8-900, the store marks it up 10-15%, then shipping R&D, God knows how many hands exchanges until it gets in-store, there is not much meat left so the manufacturer has to make a rifle for less than $500? the barrel is probably a couple of hundred at most?

Nothing, the real downside would be buying or building a 300 PRC with a 1:10" twist. The 300 win mag came out in 1963 with a 1:10" twist geared toward an upgrade to the 30-06 and its 180gr bullets. The 300 wm could handle 190 & 200gr bullets.
A 1:8" twist barrel will not over stabilize any 30 cal offerings with 300PRC's ballistic range. Enjoy!

Right, but I don't think there's any difference in cost between a 1/10 twist and a 1/9 or 8 to manufacture. But even then due to Saami constraints your...well, you know.

My Ridgeline in 300 PRC has a 1/8" twist. I will be trying out the 250 gr A tips soon
