Cleaning bolt lug recess

I use the tampon and the Q-tips. The former is center pierced by the swag; the latter are inserted--after halving--in a pre-drilled wood dowel. Another and especially for the smaller stuff is to right-angle one of those straw cleaning brushes then turn the end on itself so no metal touches the chamber. I've also used an arrow cut off. First with the feathers left on then when they're gone the nock will work, but looses the cotton--or cigarette filter--that's pinched between the ears. Sounds like your shipping is similar to mine. I use regular gun cleaning fluid and an old toothbrush; hey it works!!! I also plug the barrel with a cleaning rod with a patch, run down to the chamber then use a good blast or two of brake cleaner and then 100lbs of compressed air. I usually will do this once a year before hunting season starts, but remove the action from the stock when I do this.

Absolutely! Have been using Brake cleaner, lighter fluid, fine tooth brush, shaving brush, compressed air in some combo since 1961. Alway's passed inspection. No need for expensive route.

See if you can order those gauze plugs in your area. Probably from a medical supply business. If you can do this then we'll take the next step.

Hi can anyone tell me if there is a way to clean the bolt lug recess if you do not have the probeer tools? Non of my locals gun shops seem to have lug recess and chamber cleaning tools. I wanted to order j dewey tools online but they charge 121$ for the cheapest shipping option to where I live. That is 5 times the price of the kit I wanted to buy and I don't want to pay that much for shipping. So if anyone can give me any tips on how to diy it or use existing cleaning rods I'd appreciate it.

Try using a bottle brush with nylon bristles, available just about any grocery store, dollar stores

Ok, KISS, take a bore mop, bend it 90 degrees so it still fits into receiver and using short rod with it you can easily scrub out bolt recesses by twisting rod as needed.

1. Remove action from stock
2. Remove bolt
3. Remove trigger assembly
4. Soak action 12 hours in Acetone
5. Blow out w/high pressure air
6. Unless you are a rapid fire match shooter, stop lubing lugs. You will never wear them out.
7. If "lube you must", a finger dampened with Mobil One on the rear side of the lugs is all you need.

One more thing I do when cleaning with bore guide is to place a couple of patches within the lug recesses to sop up "stuff" that seeps in from the bore guide which has greatly diminished the amount of cleaning required for the lug area after removing the bore guide. Interesting how much does creep into this area from the bore guide. You think you have the guide tight but Kroil can find a way to get there...it is what it made to do!

Its very important to lube the back of your lugs, unless you want them galled and accuracy to go down hill. Just buy the right tool from sinclair, brownells, boretech, pma, just to name a few.

Yet to see a "galled" bolt jug.
