Primers: Std. vs. Magnum

Looking for information in regard to using standard (CCI # 400) vs. magnum (CCI # 450) small rifle primers for Lapua 6.5 x 47MM. Please feel free to weigh in on .223 also. Someone said magnum primers work well for .223 and I don't know how much to trust that info. I'm sure it has been addressed, but I'm having difficulty finding data on how much this will affect load pressure. Pretty new at reloading for rifle and appreciate all of the expertise that's available through LRH. Thank you.

I would definitely use 450's and give Rem 7.5 a try only difference between the 400 and 450 is cup thickness same with 7.5and 6.5 Rem

Normally the reason to use magnum primers is to ignite huge amounts of slow burning powder.
In some intermediate powder charges (Starting around 60+ grains) they can produce different results than the standard primers.

I found in most cases they produced more velocity, but poor Standard Deviations. accuracy issues can be overcome If this occurs but many times consistency suffers.

The 6.5 x 47 doesn't need them to get top performance, so it becomes a personal choice. I would recommend using the recommended primer in the loading manuals for best results.

I tried 6.5 Rems one time in a 222 rem mag and it pierced the 6.5. 7.5 cured the problem.
In my opinion 400 and 6.5 are best in hornet sized cases.

In SR primers there is no difference other than cup thickness.

According to my read of the article there may be differences that affect pressure . . . what am I missing?

I use CCI 450 Magnum primers in my 6.5 X 47L with great results. My Pet load in the gun is a 143 ELD-X on 36 grains of Varget and I've also been known to use RL-15 with a 123 SST. In any event, good consistent ignition and ES under 20. It's my best "long range" shooter!

I have never used anything but a 205M in 6.5 & 6x47 Lapua, and I tend to run slower powders. IMR 4451, RL 16 &17, VV N550 rates.

I got my 6.5x47 in early 2016 and it was a 9 month wait for the rifle so I read all the stuff I possibly could on line about reloading for it. A guy from TBAC had done a lot of testing and recommended the CCI 450, so I bought 1,000 of them and I'm down to about 500. Im sure the 205s are good too but I was just totally infatuated with the "magnum" status of my new primers! What a Mall Ninja, huh?

In the article unless I missed it he never talked about SR primers specifically. Now LR primers are a different story and pistol compared to SR primers.
Everything I've tested and read from manufacturers is the only difference between 400 -450 and 6.5-7.5 is cup thickness.
Call the manufacturers and ask the question see what they say.
