SHERMAN WILDCAT SUGGESTIONS

....By the way, a 375 Sherman is in the works. I'm guessing it will run a 300 grainer at 2600.......

Historically the 300 grain would be my pick (still not a bad choice), but these days there are 250, and 270 grain bullets that offer more velocity and really don't give up terminal performance except perhaps in Cape Buffalo, or Elephant.

I'm going to go with 300 grain bullet on this build. Actually planing to use a Nosler Partition. I considered cutting edge bullets but I'm concerned that the bullet length would have problems fitting in the magazine. I'm wanting a bullet with proven terminal performance on dangerous predators and I have confidence in the Patrtition for this purpose. I'm not looking for a longrange rifle on this build. My goal is a devastating round with manageable recoil using a standard long action.
Elkaholic thanks for the oportunity.

Your concerns about the CE bullets are justified. They are not bullets that will allow for mag feeding. For your purposes, the choice of the Partition makes perfect sense. In my 375 H&H, I developed single-feeding CE loads for long range. When I was planning to go after Cape Buffalo, I chose 300 grain Swift A-frames. The Cape Buffalo hunt ended up becoming overtaken by events, but I completely understand your thought process.

Looking forward to seeing how your build works out. I think it will be a very well balanced package.

I concidered the A-frame as well. The NP I belive has a slight edge on BC so I decided to go that way.

Well, sometimes making a suggestion works. Wyodog sent me a 300 grain Partition which I set up in a dummy round, and off to JGS for a reamer. The coal will be about 3.520". This is a pretty gnarly looking round that should fill a pretty good niche at around 2700 fps and 4879 ft/lbs M E, all on an '06 head size! Here is a pic of the loaded round that I took before shipping today. 6.5 Sherman on left. I could see one of Steves "Hammers" being pretty lethal in this baby too!

Cutting Edge Bullets make the Maximus line that are very oal & mag friendly along with a bigger hollow point cavity for expansion, currently testing the 175 gr Maximus in my mini 375 'cat and have 500 pc special order of the 400 gr 408 cal Maximus bullets coming (shipped today) , should be interesting

Rich,

What vel do you think you would get out of a 24" .375 cal 250-260gr if you necked up the SS and would the CE 250 make mag length?

Thinking mainly the CE 250 Swamplord posted above and 260 AB. The goal would be at least 2600 from the 260 AB. I know its no issue in a wsm just not sure with the smaller case capacity of the SS.

I would expect the efficiency gain the SS has over the WSM to decrease as bore size i/e volume and case neck increases relative to case vol and internal dimensions. I could be wrong though.

I would have to look at those bullets but based on the 300 AB in the LA I dont think length would be a problem. I expect the 338 SS to run well up in the 2700's, or 2800, with a 250 Berger, so you could calculate what a 375 would do based on that. I think the velocity might be pretty surprising, but it's new territory?
