Long time reader, first time poster. I just bought a brand new savage apex 110 300 win mag. i put 70 rounds through it this weekend, federal non-typical 180 grain soft points, from academy. I put about 50 patches, some dry, some damp, and some soaked in hoppes no. 9. however my barrel still has this fouling. is this abnormal? I ordered bore tech cu 2. should be here wednesday.

What do you mean? Don't hand hold the rifle?
No. I was being a smartass. I mean focus the camera on the bore so we can see the copper, not on the hand holding the rifle. Your pictures are all blurry on the muzzle, but the hand holding it is clear.

Try Sweet's 7.62 Copper Remover. Just make sure you follow the directions, as it is strong stuff.

I think @lancetkenyon is poking fun of your picture and how it is focused. :) I've seen as much copper in some of my barrels and generally have not worried about it. How was the accuracy near the end of your shooting? I think your bore tech might get a lot of it out. I have a barrel I'm working with right now that I've been able to see copper in the barrel, but it shot so good I never worried about it. After about 900 rounds precision went south big time. So I'm trying J-B bore compound per a recommendation from a bench rest shooter friend of mine and some posts on forums. It seems to be advised to go easy on it though, as it is actually an abrasive.

Well that's good to hear that you've run into similar circumstances. I was shooting 3/4 inch groups at 150 yards when I was done. Also I apologize about the focus, someone tell Apple they need a 4th camera!

That sounds pretty good to me, that's 1/2MOA precision. I'd clean it with your bore tech, but if you're not seeing precision issues I personally wouldn't worry about being able to see copper inside the barrel too much. JMO.

Is this a 300 win mag thing? This is my first magnum but I've never had issues like this before

Cut a small X in a piece of printer paper and slid it over the barrel. With the white back ground the camera will focus on the bore. I had a 458 Lott, with Hornady Interlocks, when I could still get them would copper coat the bore. I tried it all, nothing would get it out. Rifle shot well just was disheartening to look in the gun safe and see copper after cleaning. Finally tried JB Bore Bright. The red JB. That cut it! Good luck!

I've had good results from federal nontypical ammo. 3/4" @ 150yds is good groups for a factory rifle & ammo. That's good enough for some people who hand load.
