Thoughts on a 25-06?

What are your thoughts on a 25-06 rem.I'd use it for varmints too deer.Are the bc of the bullets good for some long range hunting and shooting? Is the caliber accurate?Are the bullets readily available?Any thoughts and advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have been shooting my 25-06 a lot this past year. I am shooting a T/C Encore with a 28" Pro Hunter bbl. It has been really accurate. I just started hand loading for it. Berger makes a bullet with wonderful BC. I have used others and I have really been impressed with how accurate it is. I have only shot it out to 300 yards so keep that in mind. I dont know how the round will act beyond that yet.

I've owned a 25-06 barrel and am now on a 25-06A.I barrel. I can't complain about its preformance. I use it mostly for varmints and varmint matches, target practice, although I have shot close range deer with it.

From my perspective, I probably wouldn't shoot a deer past 600 yards with it. So I would call it a mid range deer gun.

Long range varmints I have shot past 700 yards, and with the right bullets and scope you can kill them past 1200 yards.

Supposedly Berger is making some 125 VLD bullets later this year for the .257 caliber, I'm waiting on the edge of my seat.

I am building a 6mm Dasher, just because the long range bullet selection will be better varmints. I can fully dedicate my 25-06 IMP to a big game rifle.

Overall, the 25-06 has a better selection of big game bullets than the 6mm caliber.

Thanks guys for the input.I've been doing a little looking and savage offers the fp110 ,long action,heavy barrel in 25-06. Thats kindy looking at right know at this point.What kind of twist rate do es the barrel need for the 125gr bergers? Thaks for the input keep it coming.

I honestly don't know anything more about these bullets than what Eric S. of Berger announced on 6mmbr. I was hoping they would stabilize in a 1-10". I have heard of people shooting the 130 grain Wildcat bullets out of the 25-06 in a 1-10".

if berger is going to bring out a 125 in 25 cal. you will need to probably have a 1-9 twist. it takes a 1-10 twist for the 115 bergers...

There are bullets up to 150 grains available if you get the right twist for them.

Thanks guy sounding good.My only problem is that the savage comes in 1-10 twist.What are going to be the limitions of the twist rate?Is the 120gr be the top ones?? More input.

I'm shooting a Tikka in a 25/06. I use this rifle for rats to mule deer. I'm using the 115 VLD Berger for everything. You may think it's over kill for rats, but it's a kick in the butt and great practice. Oh, the bc is .523. Good luck.

Rest assured the 125gr berger will stabilize in the 1-10" twist or berger wouldn't make them.

Bullets are designed w/a certain amount of baring surface -the weight has less to do w/ it.
The 125gr wildcat does fine ,and some have report good success w/ the 130's w/a 1-10" twist rate.

25-06 owner since 1980 !!= They're great -one of the early high-performance rounds that still kicks butt today.--ME

Thanks guys i sure do appreciate all of the input and your guys exp. with this round.Now can i ask one more? The platform, i was thinking the savage 110fp ,heavy barrel,with the accu-trigger.MSRP is 649.00.I have too call my local gun shop for their price.

You won't go wrong w/a savage = they shoot.

The only shortcoming might be the stock ,although you can do a little stiffening and get it up to speed.

Good old savage =made in the USA !!!!!!!!!!!

I got my 25-06 at the age of 15. I killed 8 elk and 8 deer in 8 consecutive years and. I love this caliber. Knocks the crap out of a mule deer at 300 yards. My furthest elk shot was 500 yards. You can't go wrong with this caliber in my opinion. Those 115 grn bergers are awsome. Hope you enjoy shooting it. Oh, I also love savages. They are the most accurate rifles I own.

Thanks again guys on the advice.I just purchased a stevens model 200 in 25-06.Then bought rem 100gr soft points just for fouder.Off the belly in balmy MN ,25degrees with some wind 6 shots .8 at 100 yards very impressive.The trigger is terrible looking to order a new one.So i buy the rifle 289.99 plus tax,then off to find reloading stuff, rcbs dies,sierra game king 117gr.,then some brass,and primers already have reloader 22 on the shelf.So i prep and loaded up the load from sierras manual 50.5 max started at 48.0grains hopefully shoot them today it's one below zero right now 7am. I asked the guy behind the counter for bergers and he just looked ,so i have to order off the internet.
