I recently had a 300 wsm built as a pack gun. 24" Pacnor 3 contour fluted, Mcmillan stock etc. I topped it with a 2x9x42 swaro for weight. It is fairly light but have to be honest frustrated with load development. Hard to get the bullet seated out yet still fit in magazine. Plus i already hve a buyer for the gun that will pay me what i paid. I have an original Tikka in 300 win mag with a 24" that shoot fairly well stock. I am thinking about having an ultralight stock put on like a Mcmillan edge, maybe mcmillan classic with less fill or even an HS. Any thoughts on stocks? But curious since it will be a mule deer/blacktail pack gun if you guys think i can get 150 or 165/168's to shoot well in the gun. I figure that would be pretty flat shooting. Tikka lists the 300 win as a twist rate of 1:11. Thanks fellas.

i'm assuming that it's not shooting that well when you say frustrated with load development. i'd say you'll never be happy with it and if someone will pay you what you have in it, it's a no-brainer. sell that puppy and build another one. the process of getting one built is what makes us all tick!
as far as the 300WM and 11 twist goes. a 210 berger would be the ticket but i get the feeling you don't want to go that route, so put a 180 Accubond in it and never look back.

I don't shoot my 270 as well as i do my 25-06 ,once i get to the 140 gr bullet level of recoil accuracy drops off for me.
A 200ish grain bullet -out of a lightweight rifle [no brake] would be all but worthless to me.
Are you using the gun for blacktail ? elk ?
From what i gather the SAUM is a better candidate than the WSM in a short action gun -especially when shooting the long for caliber bullets.
I debated buying a titanium 700 in 260rem and after talking to some expierenced people about the ultralight rifles -most agreed that they are not very good for longerange shooting.

I would be using for packing in on foot for blacktails, mule deer adn the occasional elk trip in the timber. Someday maybe mountain goats. Most shots will be under 400. For couse, lopes or horseback or atv trips i have the trusty ol 7 STW. Problem is now trying to find a stock for the Tikka any thoughts.

Anything outside the norm -like tikka -cz etc. leaves you very limited in aftermarket equipment.
Not trying to tell you your business but-I'd sell the 300 beast to the buddy and build a 7-08 for those ranges.
The 7-08 will toss the 140-160 any-bonds just fine ,it would be light for elk -but a well placed shot will put him down.

If I'm not back packing in, and I was 10 years younger, I would carry my 300 Win Mag. This next year for mule deer, I will be packing a 25/06 Tikka Lite . With a Leupold VX III 4.5x14 on both rifles, the Tikka is 2.5 lbs. easier to pack. And with the 115 VLD, the Tikka reaches right out there.

I think that 25-06 sounds like the ticket. I am having a 280 Remington AWR II built by the custom shop. That rifle should weigh about 7.5lb when it is all scoped up and ready to go.

How light do you want to get? I think 7.5 to 8lb is light and still gives you some stability when you want to take a longer shot.

I thought about the 280 but i have a .270 already. I would like to get it under eight, preferably 7-7.5 with scope. I am leaning toward teh 300 win due to this gun also being used (sparingly) for elk as well. I just hope i can get it to shoot 165/168's or maybe even 150's for long distance blacktail which is waht i primarily pack in for.
I would go for it. 300wm would be great. I dont see why you could not re-do a gun or have one built that would fall in the 7.5lb range. That is very easly done with either a Rem or a Win. action.

My gunsmith and i just talked and he is thinking about one of the New Ultralight Rifle Actions, McMillan Edge or Banser Stock with a #2 contour Shilen. I was thinking maybe a #3 but he seems to think if we go #3 we wont be able to keep the weight down. Anyone have any experience with this action.?

Your not going to save much weight putting a M/C edge or Banser on the Tikka, their synthetic stock goes about 28oz, the edge and Banser are 24 (with recoil pad)
If you want to trim more weight, look at an MPI or Lonewolf stock, they both do stocks under 12oz
The Tikka barrels are a reasonably heavy contour, so you may trim more off by fitting a light flutted custom barrel, but light barrels dont = long range!

Ok here is what i am thinking on. NULA action, 24" #3 or #2 contour shilen, jewel or shilen trigger, as far as stocks NULA if available, Banser etc. I have scrapped teh idea of the Tikka due to no stocks available without paying big bucks. Plus i already got it sold. Any thoughts on this set up. As alway open for suggestions.

I use a box stock Sav 111 270 w/Booshnell 3-9x32. It's cheap and light.

I should be shooting no more than 500 that would be absolutely tops. How far are you referring to when you mean "Long Range"
