460 Rowland

I see a lot of "opinions" as we're entitled to our own viewpoint. I posted earlier and continue to read the commentary. Ultimately the proof is in the pudding. I don't know of anyone who has taken a grizz with a 460 Rowland (I personally carry an XD 45 converted to 460 & live in Alaska). But I do know a 10mm has dispatched one; enjoy the read:

Another Alaskan grizz meeting its demise via 10mm

It is a Taurus all Titanium (Except for the barrel liner) and weighs about the same as the Ammo.

Not sure they still make it or not but it is very light and easy to carry. It does however have noticeable recoil with the full house 44 special loads. At times I have used it for my carry pistol
where I thought I mite need more than the 10 mm. Now I just stay out of those places. :)

For years I carried a 44 mag while bow hunting where bear were known to be,but when I bought the Ti 44 it became my favorite for that purpose.

I don't believe in "over kill" so I carry the best option for the job under the conditions. If using the 4 wheeler, I will carry the 460 S&W in a chest holster.

S&W M329PD is a titanium version of the Taurus. It ain't a cheap date though, lists for around a $1000. I've thought about getting one, just that I've found the Glock 20 to meet my needs for a side arm black bear hunting. I like the idea of the 44 mag in a light handgun for a bear hunting sidearm, the only reason for the Glock 20 was the weight factor of the S&W mod 29. I've handled the titanium 44s before, haven't pulled the pin and bought one as of yet. But....there's always for one more at the Inn............;):)👍👍

Thanks for your thoughts. What brand and model is the 44? How's the recoil?

After many discussions I finally went back and weighed the TI 44 Taurus and loaded with 5 shots, it weighed just shy of 21 OZ. Empty, it weighs 18 OZ (Lighter than I thought). Recoil is stiff with full house loads but manageable. It also has top ports in the barrel for muzzle rise.

Being a stubby, It is also very loud but who cares in a bad situation.

To bad they don't still make them. A good friend has one just like it in 45 long colt.

Reliability and follow up shots are factors to consider.

I would probably want either in a Glock 21 (with conversion barrel).

I'm not messing with bears so I can compromise but I don't like the similarity of .45 ACP, .45 ACP+P, .45 Super and .460 Rowland.

Mine is a 10mm because it is a lot harder to confuse .40 S&W with 10mm and magazines hold more rounds. I'm not sure about recoil and follow up shots but 10mm just seems like the best step up from .45 ACP. If it is behind the .460 in muzzle energy, its probably not by much and 10mm bullets that expand to over double diameter are readily available.

For me, the more interesting question for bear is 15 rounds of 10mm or six rounds of .475 Linebaugh?
Your .475 Linebaugh holds six rounds ? Mine only holds five. I have both the .475 and the Glock 20. The .475 for about 20 years, the 10mm only about a year.

Has any of you done business directly with 460 Rowland? If so how was your experience?
I have a Glock34 9mm that I am thinking of doing their 960 Rowland conversion kit but a little uncomfortable with sending them my new gun.
Does anyone sell the kit that you ( or your gun smith) can install?
Thanks

My experience was all internet based; ordered everything on-line (new barrel, compensator, buffer spring, & mag springs). The "kit" if I recall was everything mentioned above minus the mag springs.

Thanks guys
AK49- who did you order the kit from?
Just wondering if other companies offer the kits that you can install yourself.

Ok, I will check it out again to see about just ordering the "kit" without sending in my gun.
I have been in contact with them by email and they just keep saying to send in the gun and they will do it. Even when I asked if I could just order the kit and do it myself or my gun smith...?
Thanks for your info

Depend on the rifle you are also carrying as your number one. I use the Glock 20SF 10mm with Double Tap Hunter 200gr hardcast. Recoil is stiff but tolerable.

I do have my 460 Rowland conversation finally in my XDM 4.5 , love the way it shoots! Recoil is very manageable. Have shot a lot of there bear loads 1and2 handed no issues. Set up a 8 " plate that comes down a hill on a cable to simulate the head of a bear charging.
