What cartridge?

I find it interesting the way that people have flocked to the 6.5 PRC.
Don't get me wrong. It is a very good cartridge.
But how many realize that the 6.5PRC is none other than the 300 Ruger Compact Magnum necked down to 6.5mm?

On the other hands, the 300PRC is the real thing, it is the 375Ruger case re-formed to a .308" bullet. It is a great cartridge, balllistically equivalent to the 300 Weatherby in a standard action and case.

Again, what is the 6.5 PRC? It is ballistically and capacity-wise close to the 6.5-284. Which is less than the 264 WinMag, itself on the loud side. In a Tikka, there is no benefit from a shorter case, so the 270Win becomes slightly better all around. Who would've thought, after all the hoopla?

It is ALL just hoopla. The cases have been around a long time, it's the Bullet and barrel makers that have pushed the envelope. If the bullets were available and the 25-06 and the 270 were properly twisted on release, Americans would still hate the 6.5 bore. Imagine if the .264 Win mag had been released as the .270 Win mag with an 8 twist and a factory load with 160 Berger VLDH at 3000FPS. The 7mag would be just a popular wildcat...I just answered the OPs Question!! The .277x7mm Rem Mag! (oh yeah, I already said .270 Wby).

6.5 PRC, Not that long ago someone posted how the PRC had more energy down range then the 7mm with less kick. I have both but I haven't loaded up the 6.5 PRC with a 153 grain bullet and compared the recoil, but with a break or can, the recoil is mild, but hey I think my 300 rum doesn't kick as bad as my 7mm, so what do I know!

Depends on what you want to go with it . They are both good rounds . I only have the 7 mm but I have the 6.5prc on my want list. Good luck on whatever you choose . Option #2 get one now the other later
Do with it (phone correct)

At the max distances you are are trying to hunt, I think the 6.5 PRC would work quite well. I has milder recoil that some of other cases/calibers you were pondering. Barrel life is decent and you get quite a bit of choice in bullet weights too. A lot of hunters liking the 156 Bergers.

^^This^^.
OP.......Based off of several comments you've made in regards to "Your working parameters"
6.5PRC / Berger 156 would be a good fit.[/QUOTE]

The only hoopla I see it that peeps complicate things unnecessarily. I agree that the bullet and barrel makers are instrumental in pushing the envelope. The gun manufacturer is slowly responding but not fast enough for peeps like us. My research shows (directly from the source), while it is not plenty, the .270 Win is available to other than the standard 1:10" twist rate ...

BTW, not sure if you've seen it but a couple of members has .270-300 WM wildcats >>> https://www.longrangehunting.com/threads/270-300-win-mag-now-feasible.155307/

Cheers!

Right, that's my point though. Just as Remington hung the 260 out with the 9 twist, so Winchester standardized on the 10 for the .270. Sure you may find customs or a rare Stayer with a faster twist, but it would be a poor investment for Federal cartridge to tool up and make a Super High BC load that 50 people could shoot. Add on to that there are still a million deer hunters out there that use the 180 grain 30-06 Core-Lokt cause the 180 grain goes faster than the 150 grain.(30 more grains of powder right?) When there 170 grain 270 bullet hits the paper sideways they will swear off Federal forever. I think the .270PRC with a 8 twist or something similar is what it will take to catch the bullet options up in 270. I agree with you whole heartedly, peeps do complicate things unnecessarily.

I'm kind of partial to the 7STW. Brass can sometimes be hard to find but man they are a hammer on game!

If your going to shoot Elk at the distance you indicate you better get at .338 Lapua or similar like a .338 Rem Ultra Mag. If you can cut your distance down to say 400-500 yards you could get good results on everything you want to hunt with a 7 mm STW. Pick the weight and type of bullet for your hunt.

Yes, and no. It would depend on which PRC case was used, the SHORT 6.5 PRC or the STANDARD 300PRC. A SHORT 270 PRC would be a tough sell from the get-go, only duplicating 270 ballistics though perhaps pushing more bullets for 8"-twist and 270W's with 7" barrels. A 270 based on a 300 PRC would have more capacity than a 270 Weatherby. That would be something nice to contemplate.

If I were on Ruger or Savage staff, two companies that seem more ready to innovate in cartridge offerings, I would propose and market a long distance 270Win model with a 7" twist. Low recoil, ready market, and arguably overshadowing the 6.5-fest. Ruger American could even do a lightweight entry-priced version. A long-distance 270Win would make Jack proud to see his 270 using the best of bullets that modern tech and theory can produce. Secondly, on its heels, one could come out with yet another cartridge (sigh), a 270 PRC long with a 7" twist. Yowza. :)

Why would you go a .270 when you have so much bullet choice in .284? Doesn't make any sense.

to the OP.

300 PRC with a brake is what you need If your wanting to take elk size game at distance. Easy to find Facotry ammo for now and easy to reload for.

(Other choices are 30 nos, 300 RUM 300 win 300 Norma)

If you want a 7mm, a 28 nosler would be worth looking at, you can push the 180-195's comfortably to 3050-3200 and recoil wise it's much the same as a big 30.

I have a couple of 6.5's including PRC and love em but 500-800m is what I would limit it to and even then I'm using it to on white tail size game.

Best way to figure out what you need is to choose the bullet you want to hunt with first!

1. Choose bullet
2. Choose twist rate
3. Decide what speed you want to chuck it at
4. Pick length of barrel
5. Work out which case is going to give you case capacity to throw the desired bullet/bullet weight at the desired speed.

for your intended purpose it's the 180-195 7mm or the 215-230 .308 bullets (at a minimum I would think)

to get the best out of these high BC bullets you want to be in the 3000 fps range. This leaves you with the bigger magnums mentioned in previous post.
