What is the best handheld GPS for hunting etc.? I plan on putting onX map on it. Please let me know what you guys have and like or dislike that you have used what should I buy and what should I stay away from.

Okay I will admit that I'm not real tech savvy. But have you considered putting onX on your phone. I have it on my phone (well I should admit that my son was kind enough to install it for me). Anyway I do like it and even for me I find it easy to use. Can even sit in your house and do some scouting and look country over and get an idea of what things look like. Just a thought, good luck.

We down load our maps of all the areas we are going to hunt. Then put the phone on airplane mode. Guess I can't say how many days I could go with out recharging my phone. But a couple is easy and I'm pretty sure 3 would be more than doable. But you could be right a GPS could be easier. No experience going that route.

Stag.grizz I have had the same Garmin 62S for the last 10 years and it has never let me down. It takes 2 AA batteries that will last between 1.5 and 2 days as long as I turn it off at night and back on in the morning. I use rechargeable batteies and take a couple of spare sets if I am away for 4 days. I bought and loaded maps for NZ and Australia. Garmin updated to the 64 series a few years ago and they may now have the 66 series out. Not being a big fan of touch screens is why I went with the 62.

I guess no one uses a compass and a map anymore.
My Garmin 62 has done good as well. Super easy to use with gloves on & no touch screen to mess with. Easy to use & navigate. Takes the OnX chip of your choice. I also use the Delorme App mapping system thru my in-reach subscription. Awesome maps on my phone & it works well without cell service plus you can download satellite imagery before your trip for excellent detail. Also have the OnX App on my phone which is exceptional as well....I feel I'm well covered for navigation with combination of all 3 different programs
+1 for phone route. I take my phone anyway, so why add another electronic device? Learn how to download maps so you don't need cell signal and you'll be impressed and happy, plus save the money you would have spent on a dedicated GPS.
Side note: I use Gaia GPS instead of OnX, but they're both great. There are other great ones, too.

If Im going remote I always have 2 GPS units, a Garmin(currently a 64sc) & phone with offline maps.
I also take a PLB as well.
You hope you never have to push that button, but its there if you need it!
The Garmin Inreach models are fantastic as well & cover both GPS function & PLB.

Only problem I've had with Iphone, battery life is terrible with low temperatures
PLB is smart, especially if your not able to prebrief loved ones exactly where your going to be. One of my children does overseas mission work and I got her a discrete PLB to keep on her at all times.
This is true. I try to keep it close to the body but cold weather will zap the battery.
