Another 7mm-08 Question

Yeah, its been a while coming :) The basic gun is a savage 22-250 Model 12 varmint rig, I got it down in the two's/threes with just copying my other savage 12BVSS load except distance off lands. Its basically a dialed in action, trigger, lug set-up, with a bedded and floated stock waiting for another barrel.

Shows how much I like 7mm-08's could have done a 6.5CM or 260AI just as easy. I think RL16 - IMR4350 - and IMR4064 will be starting load powder's. Have had good result's with Fed210M and CCI BR-2 primers and of course 140grAB's. Got so much Norma brass have to stay with it at this point.

Just a side note guys, went chucking this afternoon, with 7-08. Using 47.5 cfe223, and 120 Nosler ballistic tip, I smoked a big old hog at a little over 200 yds. He was facing me, centered crosshair on center chest, hit exactly where aimed. Nickel sized entrance / exit. Sounded like I hit a water balloon with a bat when I hit him. Not a huge feat, but I only saw him from chest up.
Fun day!🦌

I call that a stress reliever for sure. A hog facing you don't have much area to center on, at 200yds that's a good shot.

Nothing like verifying dead on accuracy on game. It's a very gratifying feeling when all that hard work you put in on your rifle and ammo pays off like that.
Thanks LV. And I've put some sweat equity into it for sure, have learned a lot about this gun and loads. One must never underestimate this caliber /round. Its no slouch by no means. Love my 7's.

Looking in a Speer reloading manual today there was some pretty expressive velocities with 160 gr stuff and RL 17, 19, and 23. They were north of 2700fps and one above 2800 FPS with the infamous RL 26.

start at 46.0gr h4350 for the 140 and work up the sierra bullets will tolerate a jump most times I normally start about 20 thou off the lands
Ive used h4350 for in my steyr 7mm-08
For years with nothing but good results,
47 gr. Fills the case to the neck & setting
The 139 gr. Interlock @ 2.860 drives tacks
@About 2800 fps ,

Do you know what the charge range was with the RL26? I can't seem to find any information about this combination and would like to try it out.

R26 is going to be over 100% load density. I ran H4350 with a 162 AMax at 47 grs and it was 2710 FPS in a 24" barrel. It ll take more R26 than that and my case was probably 97-100% full with 4350. In addition I was loading at 2.90" oal.

Nothing to lose trying R26 but might not be enough case capacity. If you try it post your results for the rest of us to see! 👍

I was at Sportmans when I seen the data in the Speer manual for RL26
I was thinking of going a little higher with the H4350 but I'm trying to stay at mag length and good groups. I'm pretty sure though anything above the 45 grains and the 162ELDX will be compressed. I dont know how the pressure will spike either. When I did this with another rifle I went at 0.2 grain increments. Sometimes I don't think all the extra testing was worth the extra 75fps but I did buy this gun to tinker with. Tomorrow I'm going to try IMR4895. This powder worked great in a 308 that I used to own and it did not have bad swings with the temp. I never shot it above 85 degrees though. If I shot in the summer it was at day break. Also this gave me the best wind conditions and no one else around either.

I had a little spot that I could shoot out to 1100yrds without being bothered. Just me and every once in a while a deer or 3 or a few lopes. In another spot that I would shoot I had several lopes and 2 herds of 15 or more deer that generally would frequent the canyon. There was one buck that was steller but only a 3X3. The mass he was carrying in his horns were amazing. Wide somewhat tall but just super heavy antlers all the way up to the tips. Looked like someone had put some pointed cones on coke cans. I watched this deer for about 3 years and finally drew a tag. Though this would be the easiest hunt for a great animal and then the infamous lake mountains caught fire. This was in Utah (mountains to the west of Utah lake). Blew almost every deer and antelope out of the area. Never seen that deer again. Went the whole season only seeing 2 bucks that were 2points. A few years later I seen something that may had been an offspring of the 3X3. It was another buck running with about 5 does that was only a 3X3 with not as much mass but still carried his mass all the way up almost to the tips. It was a like a week or 2 before hunting season. This was where I could shoot to the 1100yrd mark. The group did not hang around long but It made me think about the other one a few years back.

So I ran by sportsman's today and I need to stand corrected I tried to find in the speer manual the RL 26 data load that I thought I seen but I must have been looking at something else or another 7mm of some sort or a 7mm-08 Ackly but the fasted load for a heavy bullet (7mm-08) was RL19. There was also a reloading magizine there that had load data and maybe that's where I seen or a thought I seen the 7mm-08 data. But what I remember it also had RL23 data too for the same 7mm. So it makes me think I was looking either at another 7mm of some sort or a 7mm-08 ackly data. But the RL19 was the fastest for a 160ish bullet except for 6.5 staball which I have found to produce the highest speeds I seen so far. Now with that said I was shooting this morning and tried some IMR4895 which produce a 1/2 MOA group mag length of 2.825. I dont know the speed yet but I'm going to retest. IMR4895 is what I ran in my old 308 which always shot good with it. I also tried another 2 loads above max and one produced good results that I'll also retest. The reason I went above max is the max posted load for IMR4895 was only a 50thou psi load. Still has some pressure left on the table and where I was at I still had no pressure issues.

Thanks for the reply and update.

I love it.. I shoot it with a tri pod.. once u have it dial ed in you can beat it.. hook it up to the computer and down load all your info.. sure beats typing in all the info .. now it's all copy and past to make graphs and enter data into excel program.. wish I would of bought it years ago... only bad thing in from Canada and I paid over a grand for it..then I got there battrie pack.. "well worth the money" and there little stand.. I will post some pics later..I would highly recommend it if your going to do lots of shooting and load development
