The bolt stop is what makes it long or short action . The Tikka is a long action but if you are running short action you will have magazine issues to match cartridges. When running short action the bolt stop is set up for short action. To run long action you must change bolt stop which is a simple swap. There a videos to show this. You will also have magazine issue unless you start with long action stock. I am sure there are those on here that can explain it better than me.
Thank You. I did just now find a video and now I get the bolt stop.

OK - say I adjust the bolt stop to shorten the cycle length to turn a 30-06 into a 6.5 crd, for example.

I'm trying to picture this . . . the newly adjusted bolt stops shorter than it did before when pulling to the rear. What I am not getting - If I am not careful to load the 6.5 crd rounds toward the front of the mag, is there an issue with bolt not being able to travel back far enough to grab and push the rear of the next shell? Do you install an insert in the rear of the mag to be sure the rounds are far enough forward?

I don't know why you would use a shorter bolt stop in a T3 but if you did you need to use the appropriate magazine.
Tikka has three magazines and at least three bolt stops not counting .223.

There is a spacer in the magazines that prevent that from happening. You load normally and when the bolt hits the stop there is a rim waiting for it.

That's whats so sweet about a Tikka plus they are so smooth. Switching to long bolt stop is ok for those who have short cartilage rifles it might hit some stocks say like the KRG but they make a different cheek piece for long bolt stop rifles. The only reason to change is if you're going to a longer cartridge.

OK, so, I only NEED to change the bolt stop if I want to go to a longer cartridge, but I probably want to leave it alone if going from a long to a shorter cartridge? If I had .243 T3, I would need to change to a longer bolt stop and longer magazine if I want to re-barrel to 280 AI. But if I had a 30-06 T3 and want to re-barrel to 6.5 cm, then I would just want to leave the bolt travel and magazine as is?

BINGO

How were these rifles born? You say the top one was factory T3X and the bottom one was factory T3. Were the original rifles the same calibers that you had them re-barreled to?

Not the bottom one for sure. To date Tikka does not chamber a rifle in 6.5 PRC. I'm want some more info myself. Sweet looking rifles.
