has any one eve hunted elk in pa on one of those tags.am 67 and was going to start applying.any info would be perfect for me.

I think I have one point shy of maximum points , I'd have to look maybe 13 or 14 points . I'll be 58 in June . they give out about 100 general tags ,with about 20 being for a bull , and have over 20000 apply . out of that 20000 who knows how many have a bunch of points collected . this past season they started an archery hunt , and also a late season cow hunt . I forget how many tags each of these hunts have , but I think it's 10 - 20 each . these three hunts will all be kept separate for the use of preference points . I know I have about as good a chance of drawing a tag as getting struck by lightening , but I keep applying . when I first started to apply I applied for either gender , any area . after I started go get some points accumulated I applied for a bull only any area , thinking I didn't want to loose all my points on a cow . I guess what I'm trying to say is , you'll never draw a tag if you don't apply , but your odds are slim .

Well, just. From someone that has eaten both Bull, and Cow! I can honestly say that Cow Eats better! Besides, one can not eat Horns! And the Eye teath, Ivorys, whistlers or what ever you want to call Them and the Meat in the Freezer is the Best Trophy! LOL
I was not aware there was a limit on points. Just checked mine and I have 13 even though I have applied in all 17 seasons. Applied for archery and late season draw when they begin last year, but the state shows 0 points for those seasons. From that I presume the max is 13. I dont Expect to get drawn and view this as a donation to support the herd.

sorry , I think I confused you .
I don't think there is a limit on the number of points you can accumulate . from the time the PGC started the point system I missed applying one year . so I'm down 1 point .
I'm pretty sure they are supposed to issue points for the other two seasons too .

I just checked I have 15 points . so if I'm thinking right , they started the point system 16 years ago .
According the PGC website, the first hunt was held in 2001, but the preference point system did not begin until 2003. By my math, I should have 19 points. Still Long odds.

I've missed a couple of years then . you're right , it is long odds .
I didn't apply for either of the new hunts this past season . I was not sure how the points would work , and I didn't want to loose my points on a cow . I've since read that the seasons will all be handled separately . this year I'll apply for the regular season , and the late cow season .

Jim, I'd hold out if I was you! There are lots of meat markets out there. But the chances of a 350"+ bull are pretty high. I wouldn't waste points on a cow!

I live just on the edge of the zones. I can tell you that the biggest concern is getting the animal out. Depending on your zone and if you hire a guide, makes a world of difference. If you're not local or retired with time on your hands, thats your best bet. A lot of the elk range is private property and a couple outfitters have secured exclusive elk rights on a bunch also. The time between the draw and the season doesn't allow most of us a chance to scout and obtain permission. So many people come to watch the elk that getting close isn't usually difficult. I have met a few of the Elk County Outfitters guides and one is a personal long time friend. They have exclusive rights to a bunch of land. There is a guide service around Pine Glenn that I think is owned by a Guenot. They have a lot also. I'm not as familiar with them however.
I am missing more than half of my points and my one son is missing all of his. I apply pretty much every year.

While I'm not a huge fan of the approach of the PAGC (no preference to in state residents) - it is all random. A friend of mine was lucky enough to be drawn this year after applying for six years.
During the 2019/20 PA elk seasons, these were the number of tags available:

- General Season: Nov. 4-9, 2019 (27 antlered, 71 antlerless)
- Late Season: Jan. 4-11, 2020 (29 antlerless)
