Hey guys, my 6yr old boy was collecting spent cartridges for his collection today when we were shooting at the range. It's visibly close to a .308 but definitely longer. Put the caliper on it & is way different than.308. Significantly longer & definitely wider. Rim of case is more wide as well. Also, I'm sure the case is definitely steel & Not brass. My boy asked me what it was & I said 308 buddy, then I looked closer & Im wrong, however I do know some shooters that can probably answer our question......

7.62x54r maybe

Steel cases are mostly Russian (or communist bloc). Maybe there is some Chinese steel case out there (I don't think it can be imported). I think Hornady "Steel Match" is one of the few other sources.

The Russians have exported lots of 7.62x54r, 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 military surplus steel case ammo. They also export new made steel case ammo in popular western cartridges like .223, .308 and others.

Most other military surplus ammo is brass case and good commercial ammo too. One difference there is that a lot of military surplus ammo is Berdan primed which is difficult to reload and almost all commercial ammo is boxer primed and reloadable.
